Abstract, the consumer-focused Ethereum layer-2 blockchain backed by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down this year after failing to develop a sustainable business, according to Cointelegraph. The network said its consumer-crypto strategy had not achieved product-market fit despite attracting hundreds of thousands of users, major brands and a large developer ecosystem.
Why Abstract is closing
Abstract launched its mainnet in January 2025 with the goal of making blockchain-based products easier for mainstream users. Its strategy centered on “consumer crypto” and entertainment, with an effort to remove some of the technical complexity commonly associated with traditional blockchain networks.
That approach ultimately did not produce a business model the company considered sustainable. Luca Netz, chief executive of Igloo Inc., said Igloo had funded Abstract for 18 months. Over a two-year period, the company lost tens of millions of dollars while developing consumer products, hiring a high-profile team, signing major brands and building a community of millions.
Netz said the company still had not found product-market fit — the point at which a product meets strong, repeatable demand from a clearly defined market. Abstract and Netz also pointed to limited institutional adoption, thin liquidity and a small decentralized-finance ecosystem as barriers to further growth.
Users must move assets before deadline
Abstract said its network will shut down on Dec. 15, 2026. Users holding funds on the chain have been instructed to transfer, or “bridge,” their assets to another blockchain before that date.
They can use either Abstract’s Migration Hub or its Native Bridge. The company warned that funds not moved before the deadline will become inaccessible. Abstract’s engineering and ecosystem teams said they would also help projects built on the network migrate to other chains.
Bridging is the process of transferring digital assets between blockchain networks. In this case, it is the key step users need to take before Abstract ceases operating.
Adoption did not translate into scale
The shutdown comes despite signs of activity on the network. More than 144 applications had been deployed on Abstract, while the blockchain had onboarded more than 400,000 users. Its partnerships included Red Bull Racing and Disney, and the wider community was described as numbering in the millions.
Those figures were not enough to overcome the business constraints identified by the company. The result illustrates the difficulty of turning consumer interest and brand partnerships into durable activity, liquidity and revenue for a blockchain network.
Abstract is also part of a broader group of blockchain projects winding down after failing to establish sustainable operations. Ethereum layer-2 network Blast recently said its operating costs exceeded revenue, while Bitcoin-focused Botanix announced its closure in June after it failed to find sufficient product-market fit.
