Why AI Agents May Need Blockchain-Based Financial Infrastructure

AI agents may eventually negotiate, buy services and transfer value without direct human action. A CoinDesk analysis argues blockchain, stablecoins and tokenized assets could provide the programmable financial infrastructure needed for that machine-driven economy.

Why AI Agents May Need Blockchain-Based Financial Infrastructure

Artificial intelligence is usually discussed through the lens of model makers, applications and platforms. But as software becomes capable of acting independently in the economy, a different question is gaining importance: what financial infrastructure will allow autonomous agents to exchange value, verify identities and settle transactions?

A CoinDesk analysis argues that blockchain and digital assets could become part of that underlying infrastructure. The case does not depend on every AI business issuing a token. Instead, it focuses on the practical requirements of an economy in which software agents may negotiate with one another, buy computing capacity, pay for data, execute transactions and make financial decisions within limits set by people.

Why autonomous software could change payments

Most existing payment systems were built around transactions initiated by individuals, companies and financial institutions. An economy with potentially millions of software agents making frequent, small-value payments across borders would create a different operating environment.

Blockchain networks can make money programmable. An agent could use a digital wallet, interact with a smart contract or transfer a stablecoin without the same degree of manual processing associated with conventional financial infrastructure. Stablecoins are especially relevant because they combine blockchain-based programmability with a familiar unit of account, such as a fiat currency.

That could support machine-to-machine commerce in which agents pay for services or resources automatically. The argument is not that blockchain will solve every problem associated with autonomous systems, but that it offers tools for moving and settling value in a way that software can use directly.

The potential investment theme therefore extends beyond companies developing AI models and applications. Greater automation could also create demand for payment systems, settlement networks, digital-asset custody, cybersecurity and infrastructure connecting traditional finance with blockchain-based markets.

Identity, ownership and tokenized assets

Autonomous transactions would require more than a way to send money. Participants would need to establish which person, company or system is behind an agent, what that agent is permitted to do and whether its actions can be verified.

Provenance is another issue. AI systems may consume data, produce intellectual property and carry out transactions. Markets will need ways to record where information originated and who owns the resulting assets. Shared blockchain records may help with verification and ownership tracking, although they cannot address every part of those challenges.

The same infrastructure could matter in capital markets. Tokenization brings traditional assets onto blockchain rails, while stablecoins have shown how financial activity can take place onchain. At the same time, AI is making parts of financial analysis and decision-making more automated.

These developments are currently advancing along separate paths, but their combination could be significant. An AI agent capable of analyzing markets would remain constrained if it could not efficiently hold, transfer or settle assets. Pairing programmable intelligence with programmable assets could give such systems a broader ability to act within defined parameters.

Institutional crypto links and market context

The wider institutional market is also showing signs of traditional finance connecting with digital-asset infrastructure. According to CoinDesk, Goldman Sachs has made its roughly $100 billion FTIXX Treasury fund available to institutional crypto firms through Lynq, a settlement network used by digital-asset companies, without tokenizing the fund itself. A licensing agreement extended by Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices also leaves room for exploring tokenized options products.

Other developments highlighted in the report included Bitcoin recovering above $84,000 after falling to $82,500, while the 10-year Treasury yield briefly reached 5.2% before yields steadied. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $30 million of inflows on Tuesday, following $2.84 billion collected over the previous six sessions.

The analysis cautions that exposure to both AI and crypto does not automatically justify a higher valuation. Previous crypto cycles showed how quickly narratives could move ahead of underlying fundamentals, and similar risks can arise when AI themes attract capital. The more durable focus, it suggests, is on infrastructure addressing concrete needs created by automation: payments, settlement, identity, custody, cybersecurity and links between digital and traditional markets.

Moneyiar market data at 09:03 on October 1, 2026, showed Ontology Gas (ONG) at $0.0932361241, down 1.27% over 24 hours but up 4.64% over seven days. Tokenlon Network Token (LON) was priced at $0.3250947374 at the time recorded by Moneyiar, up 60.11% in 24 hours and 70.72% over seven days.

The broader thesis is that three technological shifts may increasingly intersect: the internet changed how information moves, blockchain changes how value can move, and AI changes who—or what—can make economic decisions. If autonomous agents become a meaningful part of commerce, the infrastructure supporting their financial activity may become as important as the applications they operate.
