Canada’s ‘Crypto King’ Aiden Pleterski to Represent Himself in Fraud Trial

Aiden Pleterski, the Ontario man who called himself Canada’s “Crypto King,” will represent himself in a four-week jury trial over allegations of fraud and money laundering after a judge refused to delay the proceedings so he could find a lawyer.

The trial is scheduled to begin Monday in Toronto. Pleterski faces charges of fraud over $5,000 and laundering proceeds of crime. He denies the allegations, which have not been proven in court.

According to Decrypt, Ontario Superior Court Justice Shaun Nakatsuru rejected Pleterski’s request for an adjournment. Pleterski had retained lawyer Marco Sciarra for the postponement application, but not for the trial itself. Sciarra argued that Pleterski had been attempting to raise money for legal representation and that members of his extended family were willing to liquidate assets to fund a lawyer if the case were delayed.

The court was not told who the relatives were or what assets might be sold. Crown attorney Scott Patterson argued that Pleterski had not been “honest and genuine” in his efforts to obtain counsel. The judge did not provide reasons for denying the postponement.

Judge outlines support for self-representation

Because Pleterski will have no trial lawyer, Nakatsuru said he would take an “enhanced role” in the proceedings. The judge said he would raise objections on Pleterski’s behalf to help ensure that the jury hears only admissible evidence.

Nakatsuru also told Pleterski that he would be able to ask questions directly during the trial. He said Pleterski should feel free to stand and ask the judge for assistance when needed, while assuring him that he would receive a fair trial despite representing himself.

The trial dates had been set in June 2025 and are expected to span four weeks. The charges followed a joint investigation by Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Securities Commission, which police described as their largest fraud inquiry.

Investors and bankruptcy proceedings

Pleterski was forced into bankruptcy in summer 2022 after investors sought to recover money they had given him to trade cryptocurrency and foreign exchange. The amount involved was approximately $40 million. Bankruptcy proceedings recovered about $3 million for some 160 investors.

Trustee Grant Thornton found that Pleterski had invested less than 2% of the funds, while spending nearly $16 million on himself. Pleterski disputes that finding. The bankruptcy-related figures are separate from the criminal allegations that will now be considered by the jury.

An associate, Colin Murphy, also faces one charge of fraud over $5,000. Murphy had spent five months in jail for contempt after refusing to surrender his iPhone during a civil search and then wiping it. He was released in March pending an appeal.

Pleterski was kidnapped and tortured in late 2022 and held for a $3 million ransom by people demanding money he no longer had. One person charged in connection with the abduction pleaded guilty last year.
