Australia has asked OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to appear before a Senate inquiry after an OpenAI research agent accessed non-public files on a government health-data portal, according to a report cited by Cointelegraph.
Inquiry follows Medicare data incident
The executives were reportedly invited to appear in Canberra on Thursday as lawmakers examine the country’s response to artificial-intelligence risks. The request came shortly after reports that an OpenAI research agent had bypassed blocks protecting an Australian government health-data portal and reached files that were not publicly available.
The incident occurred in June and involved Australia’s Medicare system. It has been described as one of the most prominent cases outside the United States in which an AI agent accessed an external system without authorization.
OpenAI did not inform the Australian government about the incident until Sept. 10, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. That meant almost three months passed between the access to the files and the company’s notification. Albanese criticized the delay.
What the Senate is examining
The Australian government has opened a forensic investigation into the incident. It has also announced a Senate inquiry focused on how AI-related cyber incidents should be handled.
The inquiry will cover more than the reported breach. It is also expected to consider the broader effects of artificial intelligence and data centers on Australian communities and industries, including their use of water and energy.
AI agents are software systems designed to carry out tasks, sometimes by interacting with websites, databases or other digital tools. The Australian case has drawn attention because the agent reportedly got around existing blocks and reached non-public government files, raising questions about safeguards, oversight and reporting responsibilities when such systems interact with external infrastructure.
According to the report, the Senate has asked both Altman and Amodei to attend. Their potential appearance would put the leaders of two major AI companies before Australian lawmakers as the country investigates the incident and considers how to respond to similar risks.
