Binance Files for Brazil Crypto License Before Regulatory Deadline

Binance has applied for authorization to operate as a cryptocurrency service provider in Brazil, seeking to preserve access to its platform in one of Latin America’s largest crypto markets as a regulatory deadline approaches.

The exchange submitted its application to Brazil’s Central Bank on Oct. 23 through its local entity, BBrasil, according to Cointelegraph. Existing crypto service providers must file authorization applications by Friday, Oct. 30, to continue operating under transitional arrangements. The application itself does not mean that Binance has received approval.

Binance said the filing is intended to support continued access for Brazilian customers to crypto assets, stablecoin trading, payments and investment services. A stablecoin is a type of digital asset designed to maintain a relatively stable value, often by being linked to a traditional currency or other reference asset.

The licensing move comes alongside a reduction in the services available to Brazilian users. From Tuesday, Binance said it would restrict crypto lending, margin trading and other products, while removing 22 crypto assets from its Brazilian offering.

Services affected in Brazil

The changes reflect Binance’s effort to operate within current Brazilian regulations while its application is considered. The company said it hopes discussions with the Central Bank will eventually allow it to bring back some of the products that have been discontinued.

Thiago Sarandy, Binance’s general manager in Brazil, said the company supports a regulated market that takes account of the characteristics of virtual assets. He added that Binance wants technology and innovation to remain accessible, while expressing hope that dialogue with the Central Bank will enable the return of additional products in the near future.

The filing therefore represents a request to continue operating, rather than confirmation that Binance can maintain every part of its existing business. The restrictions and delistings are already part of the measures announced for Brazilian customers.

Why the application matters

Brazil is described in the source material as one of Latin America’s largest cryptocurrency markets. The authorization process could determine how Binance provides trading, payment and investment-related services to customers there under the country’s regulatory framework.

For users, the immediate effect is a narrower range of products and assets on the platform. For Binance, securing authorization would provide a formal basis for continuing its local operations, although the company’s application remains subject to the Central Bank’s decision.
