Cryptocurrency prices fell sharply after a multibillion-dollar hack at Binance, with the exchange’s native BNB token losing more than 8% in 24 hours and Bitcoin trading close to $77,000. Ether and several decentralised-finance tokens also declined as traders reacted to the breach and Binance paused deposits and withdrawals.
According to Cointelegraph, Binance said it would cover all losses linked to the incident and temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while it carried out security checks. The exchange later revised its estimate of frozen assets to around $3 billion, compared with an earlier figure of $2.54 billion.
Crypto markets react to Binance breach
BNB, the token associated with BNB Chain, traded near $693, down about 8.2% over 24 hours based on CoinGecko data cited in the report. Bitcoin fell 4.8% to approximately $77,131, while Ether dropped 5.7% to around $2,217.
The decline extended beyond the largest cryptocurrencies. Aave’s AAVE token fell 11.3% to $118.54, and Uniswap’s UNI declined 10.4% to $6.48. Both are linked to decentralised-finance platforms, where users can access services such as lending and trading through blockchain-based protocols rather than traditional intermediaries.
Market sentiment also weakened. The Bitcoin Fear and Greed Index moved into “fear” territory with a reading of 30, its lowest level since Aug. 14. The index is designed to indicate whether market conditions are being shaped more by anxiety or optimism; a lower reading signals greater fear among market participants.
Binance and Aave take precautionary steps
Binance’s decision to halt deposits and withdrawals was presented as a temporary measure while security checks were under way. The exchange also pledged to absorb the losses, rather than passing them on to users.
Aave separately said it had frozen new deposits and borrowing across its community-operated V3 and V4 markets as a precaution. The lending platform said its contracts were unaffected. It added that users could continue withdrawing funds and repaying loans.
The differing responses show how a security incident at a major crypto exchange can affect projects and tokens beyond the organisation directly involved. BNB recorded the steepest decline among the major assets listed in the report, while DeFi tokens also came under pressure.
Moneyiar market picture

BNB stood at $740.86, showing a 0.81% 24-hour gain and a 3.32% seven-day increase in the Moneyiar data. NEAR Protocol was at $4.62, up 3.36% over 24 hours and down 6.21% over seven days. These figures were recorded before the market moves described after the Binance hack and are not directly comparable with the later CoinGecko prices.
