Binance’s perpetual contract linked to the leveraged SOXL semiconductor ETF recorded a 5.9151% decline from its opening mark to its intrahour low during the 21:00–22:00 UTC hour on October 17, according to CryptoSlate. The episode shows why a narrow mark-to-index limit does not prevent losses or liquidation when the reference price itself moves lower.
SOXL mark fell while the reference index moved lower
Binance’s one-minute records show the SOXLUSDT perpetual opening at 93.79 USDT at 21:00 UTC. Its mark price, the exchange’s reference price for assessing margin risk, fell to an intrahour low of 88.24 USDT during the 21:41 minute. That represented a 5.9151% decline from the opening level.
The contract ended the final minute of the hour at 90 USDT, or 4% below its opening mark. The corresponding index began at 93.95 USDT and finished at 90.22 USDT, a decline of about 3.9%.
The contract is quoted and settled in USDT, Tether’s dollar-tracking stablecoin. These figures relate to Binance’s derivative contract, not to Saturday trading in SOXL shares on NYSE Arca. SOXL is the Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X ETF, whose underlying asset is the price of one share of that fund.
When the mark and index were matched minute by minute, all 60 closing observations showed the mark below the index. The discount ranged from approximately 0.00284% to 2.9%, remaining below Binance’s stated 3% weekend limit. The 5.9% low, however, was recorded within a minute, while the comparison with the index used matched minute closes. The one-hour sample therefore does not establish compliance on every tick.
Why the 3% band did not cap the loss
The band and the decline from a trader’s entry price measure different things. A mark-to-index limit compares two prices at the same time. It does not limit how far both prices can move from the price at which a position was opened.
Binance’s detailed TradFi FAQ, shown with a September 23 update, describes a mark-to-index constraint of plus or minus 3% for equity-based perpetuals during weekends and holidays. The exchange also reserves the right to alter deviation constraints during extreme market conditions.
The reference index is not necessarily frozen when the underlying stock market is closed. Binance’s published Clearing Procedures describe an orderbook-derived reference for weekends and other periods when the underlying market is shut. The reference uses the average of impact bid and impact ask prices and applies exponentially weighted moving-average smoothing.
Smoothing can moderate how quickly inputs affect the index, but it does not prevent the reference from changing. If the orderbook-derived inputs decline, the smoothed index can also move down. The mark may therefore remain close to the index while both fall substantially from an earlier entry price.
Binance’s general learn-page summary describes the index outside underlying market hours as fixed, while the more detailed FAQ says fixed mode for equity perpetuals during maintenance, holidays and weekends was replaced on May 16, 2026, at 00:00 UTC. The source material says the exact historical rulebook revision, smoothing parameters and margin settings for the October hour remain unestablished.
Liquidation depends on margin, not only the price band
A trader must distinguish among the last execution price, the reference index, the mark price and the position’s liquidation threshold. The mark is used for margin-risk calculations, but liquidation occurs when it reaches the applicable threshold for the account.
That threshold depends on the position’s margin arrangement, including whether the trader uses cross or isolated margin. Binance’s clearing procedures separately set out initial margin, maintenance margin and leverage tiers, and allow margin requirements to change, including for existing positions. A 3% mark-to-index limit is therefore not the same as a 3% protection against losses or liquidation.
SOXL introduces additional leverage-related complexity. Direxion targets 300% of the daily performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index for SOXL, before fees and expenses. Because that objective resets daily, returns over longer periods depend on the path taken by the underlying index. This fund-level daily leverage is separate from any leverage selected on Binance’s perpetual contract.
MarginPad’s October 17 UTC recap recorded $11.3 million in SOXL liquidated positions across 1,043 events in its full-day, cross-exchange feed. That figure represents the value of liquidated positions, not investors’ cash losses.
