Bitcoin’s 2026 Low Came Months Before the U.S. Midterm Election Pattern

Bitcoin’s 2026 low arrived 125 days before the U.S. midterm election, unlike major lows after the 2014, 2018 and 2022 votes. Its recovery from July suggests the current market cycle may not follow that historical timing.

Bitcoin’s 2026 Low Came Months Before the U.S. Midterm Election Pattern

Bitcoin’s market history has often placed major bear-market lows shortly after U.S. midterm elections. But the cryptocurrency’s 2026 recovery began much earlier, raising questions about whether its current cycle will follow the timing seen in 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Bitcoin reached a low of $57,850 on July 1, according to CoinDesk reporting, or about 125 days before the U.S. election scheduled for Nov. 3. By Oct. 22, it had climbed to approximately $81,455, a recovery of about 40% from the July low. The rebound came despite bitcoin being down roughly 6% over the preceding 30 days.

The timing differs from the previous three market cycles. Bitcoin’s major lows came in January 2015, December 2018 and November 2022. Those turning points occurred approximately 71 days, 38 days and 13 days after the relevant U.S. midterm elections, respectively.

That history has made the period around midterm elections an important reference point for bitcoin observers. However, the earlier 2026 low means the market has already passed through a substantial decline and recovery before this year’s vote. It does not establish that bitcoin will avoid further weakness, but it does show that the timing of the current cycle is not matching the earlier sequence.

Bitcoin’s pre-election record

Bitcoin has also posted significant declines during the wider periods leading up to past midterm elections. It fell approximately 29% in the six months before the 2018 midterms and about 37% during the six months before the 2022 election.

Those figures describe broad market performance rather than a direct effect from voting dates. A midterm election is an election held halfway through a U.S. president’s four-year term, and financial markets can be influenced by uncertainty surrounding the political and economic outlook. But the historical data presented here does not show that elections alone caused bitcoin’s declines or recoveries.

Instead, the comparison points toward bitcoin’s own market cycles as a potentially more consistent explanation for its recurring weakness around midterms. The asset’s earlier lows happened near the election window, but the gaps varied substantially—from 13 days after the 2022 vote to 71 days after the 2014 election.

The 2026 experience extends that variation in the opposite direction. Bitcoin’s low arrived 125 days before Election Day, while the price later recovered by roughly two-fifths. This makes the current cycle different from the post-midterm bottom pattern seen in the three previous examples.

Technology stocks offer a mixed comparison

Technology stocks have also weakened around some midterm periods, although their performance has been less uniform. The Invesco QQQ Trust, an exchange-traded fund that tracks a basket of large Nasdaq-listed companies, fell about 23% from the end of September to its December 2018 low. Much of that decline occurred after the election.

QQQ also dropped approximately 17% in the three months before the 2022 midterms. The 2014 period, however, produced a different result: the fund gained 17% over the six months before that election.

Recent performance also separates the two assets over a longer horizon. Bitcoin and QQQ were both down roughly 6% over the 30 days covered in the report. Over 90 days, bitcoin was still up 26%, while QQQ had gained 3%. The technology-focused fund’s pullback followed an all-time high of $762.86 on Oct. 6.

The contrasting results weaken the case for treating the midterm calendar as a standalone explanation for market moves. Bitcoin’s relationship with election periods appears to overlap more closely with its internal boom-and-bust cycles than with a consistent pattern in technology shares.

Moneyiar market picture

Moneyiar data recorded at 07:59 on Oct. 24, 2026, put bitcoin at $80,605.61, down 1.04% over 24 hours and 1.23% over seven days.

Other assets in the Moneyiar data were also lower:

  • Lighter (LIT) traded at $3.1068, down 9.15% over 24 hours and 3.26% over seven days.
  • Monad (MON) stood at $0.02116, down 2.53% over 24 hours and 6.65% over seven days.
  • Ontology (ONT) was priced at $0.05114, down 3.03% over 24 hours and 2.71% over seven days.

These figures provide a snapshot after bitcoin’s reported recovery from its July low. They do not change the historical comparison: the central question is whether the 2026 market bottom occurred in July, well before the election, rather than in the weeks following it as happened in the previous three cycles.
