Bitcoin’s recent advance has lost momentum after the cryptocurrency climbed above $87,400, leaving traders focused on whether buyers can defend a support zone around $82,000. A sustained break below that area could push the market into the high $70,000s, while a successful defense may reopen the path toward $90,000 and potentially $100,000.
Why $82,000 matters
Bitcoin reached a high above $87,400 on Sept. 21 before retreating toward the $82,000-to-$83,000 area. That range is attracting attention because it previously acted as a ceiling: bitcoin struggled to move above $82,000 in May and again in early September. After the level was eventually broken, technical analysts began viewing it as support—a price area where buying may be strong enough to absorb selling.
The importance of that zone is also tied to bitcoin’s earlier market behavior. The cryptocurrency reached a peak around the same level in May, then fell to approximately $57,000 in June. In technical analysis, a former resistance level can become a new support level, making the current test particularly significant for traders assessing whether the broader upward structure remains intact.
Jeff Anderson, head of U.S. operations at crypto trading firm STS Digital, identified $82,000 as the main level to watch. He said the repeated failure to move decisively through that area formed a “double top,” a chart pattern in which prices reach a similar high twice without sustaining a breakout. Anderson said a break below the level could result in a decline into the high $70,000s.
The bullish and bearish cases
The negative scenario would become more credible if bitcoin loses the broader $81,500-to-$83,000 range and cannot recover it. Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet, said holding that zone would keep the market structure constructive. She identified three conditions that could make a deeper correction more likely:
- Several consecutive sessions of negative flows from spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
- A continued increase in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield.
- A failure of support below $82,000.
Spot bitcoin ETFs hold bitcoin and issue shares that trade on exchanges. Their flows are watched as an indicator of demand from investors using those products. Sustained outflows can suggest that money is leaving the funds, although the source material does not establish that ETF flows alone determine bitcoin’s price.
Iliya Kalchev, an analyst at Nexo Dispatch, placed his key threshold somewhat lower, saying a sustained break below $80,000 would indicate that the market may not be ready to resume its advance for some time. However, he also said renewed momentum could carry bitcoin well above $90,000. Other analysts cited in the report continue to see a possible move toward $100,000 if the support area holds.
Bond yields and inflation data add uncertainty
The recent weakness has coincided with pressure in the U.S. government bond market. Treasury prices have been falling while yields have been rising. Higher yields on relatively safe government debt can make riskier assets, including cryptocurrencies, less attractive to some investors.
Anderson attributed the current softness primarily to the bond market rather than to a deterioration specific to bitcoin. He said volatility in fixed-income markets and the continuing sell-off in Treasurys were weighing on the cryptocurrency’s performance.
The next important signal may come from economic data. Anderson pointed to the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation measure, as a guide for the market’s view of how persistent inflation may be. The release could therefore influence expectations for interest rates and the appeal of riskier assets, although the source material does not specify what the data will show.
According to CoinDesk, the immediate question for bitcoin bulls is whether the recent pullback remains a normal test of former resistance or develops into a broader correction. For now, the area between roughly $81,500 and $83,000 is the line separating those possibilities in the analysts’ view.
Moneyiar market picture
Moneyiar data at 09:09 on Oct. 1, 2026, showed bitcoin at $83,576.73, up 0.44% over 24 hours but down 0.04% over seven days. That price places bitcoin near the support area highlighted by analysts, though market prices can change after the stated timestamp.
The same Moneyiar data showed ONEchain at $0.1375040968, with a 0.86% 24-hour increase and a 7.19% seven-day decline. A separate listing for Harmony, also using the symbol ONE, stood at $0.0023881901, up 9.13% over 24 hours and 40.01% over seven days as of 22:04 on Sept. 25, 2026.
