Bitcoin remained near $83,000 as rising Treasury yields and Brent crude prices strengthened expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase. Zcash fell 12%, while the broader crypto market held near $2.86 trillion ahead of Wednesday’s key U.S. inflation report.

Bitcoin Holds Near $83,000 as Oil and Treasury Yields Revive Rate-Hike Fears

Bitcoin traded just above $83,000 during Asian hours on Tuesday as higher oil prices and rising U.S. Treasury yields renewed concerns about inflation and further Federal Reserve interest-rate increases. The move came alongside weakness in global equities and a sharp decline in Zcash, while a handful of smaller crypto tokens posted gains.

Bitcoin tests the lower end of its recent range

Bitcoin fell less than 1% to just above $83,100, testing the lower boundary of the range in which it traded last week. The decline followed a retreat from levels above $87,000 and came as the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield reached its highest point since 2007.

Higher government-bond yields can make assets that do not pay income, including bitcoin, less attractive relative to interest-bearing investments. In this case, the rise in yields also reflected renewed market concern that inflation could remain strong enough to prompt another Federal Reserve rate increase.

Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, said bitcoin was testing the $83,000 area and that a move toward $82,000 could be expected under current market conditions. He described a sustained return below $80,000 as an important indication that the market might not be ready to resume its advance for some time. By contrast, renewed bullish momentum could take bitcoin well above $90,000, he said.

Those levels are market scenarios cited by the analyst, rather than confirmed forecasts. Bitcoin’s overall cryptocurrency market remained considerably more optimistic than sentiment in stocks: a widely followed crypto sentiment index stood at 74 out of 100 on Monday, just below the “extreme greed” category.

Zcash leads losses among major tokens

Zcash was the weakest performer among major tokens, dropping 12% to about $1,380, according to CoinDesk data. Solana and HYPE each declined between 3% and 4%, while Dogecoin fell 3% and BNB lost 2%. XRP dropped nearly 2%. Ether and TRX were little changed.

Performance among smaller tokens was mixed. The Graph’s GRT rose 18%, while Immutable’s IMX gained nearly 10%, according to FxPro. UNI and Bitcoin Cash each fell about 10%, and Dash declined 7%.

The total value of the cryptocurrency market remained near $2.86 trillion. This indicates that, despite the declines in several prominent tokens, the broader market had not experienced a comparable overall contraction at the time covered by the report.

CoinDesk reported the price moves and the market backdrop. Zcash, a cryptocurrency focused on privacy-preserving transactions, was among the clearest sources of pressure in the token market, while gains in GRT and IMX showed that selling was not uniform across crypto assets.

Oil and bonds put pressure on risk assets

The wider financial backdrop was less supportive. Brent crude rose more than 1% to nearly $107 a barrel, extending its gains for a second consecutive session. Hopes for an imminent diplomatic breakthrough with Iran had weakened, contributing to the rise in oil prices.

More expensive oil can add to inflation pressures because energy is a significant input for households and businesses. Traders responded by increasing bets on another Federal Reserve rate hike. The 10-year Treasury yield was up one basis point at 5.25% in Asian trading after reaching its highest level since 2007 on Monday.

Global stocks also weakened. MSCI’s All Country World Index fell to its lowest level since Sept. 18, while Nasdaq 100 futures slipped 0.3% after a technology-led selloff on Wall Street. The stock-market decline contrasted with the crypto sentiment reading, which remained close to the extreme-greed zone despite the recent pullback.

Wednesday’s inflation report is the next test

The next major data point for markets is Wednesday’s release of the Commerce Department’s August personal consumption expenditures price index. The PCE index is the inflation measure most closely watched by the Federal Reserve.

A reading hotter than expected could strengthen expectations of additional rate increases and push Treasury yields higher, adding to the forces that have weighed on bitcoin. The report therefore has significance beyond the bond market: it could influence the relative appeal of cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive assets as traders reassess the path of U.S. monetary policy.
