Bitcoin fell below $82,000 after Wall Street opened on Wednesday as hotter-than-expected US inflation pushed bond yields higher and weighed on risk-sensitive markets. The move followed the release of September consumer-price data showing that energy costs, particularly gasoline, drove much of the monthly increase.
According to Cointelegraph, Bitcoin reached $81,926 on Bitstamp after the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported annual consumer-price inflation of 3.7% for September. That was above the 3.6% consensus expected by most of the market.
The report also affected other major markets. Crypto prices, gold and stock-market futures moved lower after the data was released, while US Treasury yields rose sharply. The 10-year US yield reached 5.329%, leaving it about three basis points below a new 24-year high.
Energy prices drive September inflation
Gasoline was the most visible source of pressure in the report. The gasoline index rose 9.1% year over year in September and accounted for more than half of the monthly increase in the overall consumer-price index, according to the official release.
The energy index increased 5.2% during the month, following a 2.1% rise in August. The source material linked the increase in fuel prices to developments around the Middle East conflict and an oil-supply crisis.
Inflation was not limited to energy. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 2.6% from a year earlier. That figure was also 0.1 percentage point above expectations.
The broader increase has kept attention focused on how price pressures could influence Federal Reserve policy. Sonu Varghese, chief macro strategist at Carson Group, told CNBC that investors should have expected elevated figures, while also pointing to the potential effects of higher diesel prices and the AI boom.
Markets reassess the Federal Reserve outlook
Higher inflation data prompted traders to adjust their expectations for interest-rate policy. Data from CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed that the probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 meeting rose to 53.7%, compared with 22.1% the previous day.
For December, the probability of another 25-basis-point increase stood at 50%.
Those expectations were not uniform. Theresa Sheehan, an economic analyst at Econoday, said the soft payroll figures in the September employment report could leave the Federal Open Market Committee on hold at the October meeting, although with a clear bias toward a December hike.
A basis point is one-hundredth of a percentage point, so a 25-basis-point move would equal a quarter of a percentage point. Rate expectations matter across financial markets because higher expected borrowing costs can increase bond yields and change the relative appeal of assets such as equities, gold and cryptocurrencies.
The next key US inflation release is the September Producer Price Index, or PPI, due Friday. The PPI measures price changes received by producers and will provide another data point for markets assessing inflationary pressure.
Bond yields surge while gold retreats
The inflation surprise was particularly disruptive for bond markets. The US 10-year Treasury yield, which is sensitive to changes in inflation and energy prices, climbed to 5.329%. Economist Robin Brooks described the report as a renewed threat to a global bond-market sell-off, writing that markets had appeared to be stabilizing before the data was published.
Gold also declined, reaching as low as $4,079 per ounce after the CPI figures. Bitcoin’s decline occurred in the same market environment, with its price action continuing to move around the $82,500-$83,400 area identified by analysts as an important support zone.
The immediate question for Bitcoin was whether that area would continue to hold. The reported low of $81,926 placed the cryptocurrency below both the $82,000 threshold and the lower edge of that highlighted range.
