Bitcoin Dominance Rises as Altcoins Slide and ETF Flows Remain Volatile

Bitcoin’s share of the cryptocurrency market has risen to 60%, its highest level since May, as traders favor the largest digital asset while altcoins decline. Bitcoin’s price remains volatile, however, and analysts say inconsistent ETF flows and the coming Federal Reserve meeting could shape sentiment.

Bitcoin Dominance Rises as Altcoins Slide and ETF Flows Remain Volatile

Bitcoin is regaining ground in the crypto market’s internal rankings as investors turn toward the largest digital asset while smaller tokens suffer steeper declines. Bitcoin’s dominance, which measures its share of the total value of digital assets, reached 60% on Wednesday, its highest level since May, according to CoinDesk.

The shift has occurred even as bitcoin’s price action remains uneven. Bitcoin briefly moved above $84,000 on Wednesday before falling below $82,000 on Thursday. The retreat left the market without a clear upward direction, with traders waiting for a new catalyst to revive momentum.

Ether, XRP and solana were broadly little changed to modestly higher over the seven-day period covered in the report. Zcash was the only major cryptocurrency to record a gain of more than 10% during that period. By contrast, smaller and more speculative areas of the market recorded sharper losses.

The CoinDesk Memecoin Index dropped more than 5%. The CoinDesk Computing Select Index declined 3.5%, while the DeFi Select Index fell 2.5%. The contrast suggests that market weakness has been concentrated more heavily among alternative cryptocurrencies and thematic tokens than in bitcoin itself.

Why bitcoin is attracting relative demand

Bitcoin dominance rises when bitcoin accounts for a larger proportion of the combined cryptocurrency market value. That can happen because bitcoin gains more than other tokens, because alternative coins fall more sharply, or because both developments occur at the same time.

In this case, the higher dominance rate has accompanied weakness across much of the wider market. Investors appear to be favoring bitcoin’s relative size and liquidity over smaller digital assets, which tend to experience larger price swings when market sentiment deteriorates.

The market’s behavior also marks a change from an earlier period in which cryptocurrencies had outperformed more traditional assets. Joel Kruger, a market strategist at LMAX Group, said the sector had moved into closer alignment with equities while investors waited for a fresh crypto-specific catalyst.

Kruger also identified the global macroeconomic environment as the main influence on markets. He said bitcoin’s limited supply could help it withstand potential turbulence in global equities, although the report did not identify a specific event that would trigger such a move.

ETF flows and the next Federal Reserve meeting

Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, allow investors to gain exposure to an asset through a listed fund rather than holding the underlying asset directly. For bitcoin, the flow of money into or out of such products is closely watched because it can indicate whether institutional and other market demand is strengthening or weakening.

Vikram Subburaj, chief executive of India-based Giottus exchange, said ETF demand had not yet developed into a consistent source of buying. He described flows as volatile and said sustained inflows would be needed to confirm a stronger recovery. His comments point to a market that has not yet received a clear signal of durable demand, despite bitcoin’s improved share of total crypto value.

The U.S. Federal Reserve is scheduled to meet on interest-rate policy the following week. Interest-rate decisions and signals from central banks can influence broader risk appetite, including demand for volatile assets such as cryptocurrencies. The report said traders were monitoring both ETF flows and Federal Reserve signals as they assessed the market’s next direction.

For now, bitcoin’s rise in dominance does not represent a broad-based recovery across digital assets. It instead shows that bitcoin is holding up better than many altcoins while the wider market searches for fresh momentum.
