Bitcoin Falls Below $82,000 as Tesla Capex Miss and KOSPI Drop Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin fell below $82,000 after its move toward $85,000 was rejected, while Tesla’s lower-than-expected third-quarter capital expenditure and a 3.52% drop in South Korea’s KOSPI added pressure to risk-sensitive markets. Rising Bitcoin derivatives open interest also increased the risk of a deeper reversal.

Bitcoin Falls Below $82,000 as Tesla Capex Miss and KOSPI Drop Weigh on Markets

Bitcoin retreated below $82,000 on Thursday after failing to hold a move toward $85,000, as Tesla’s quarterly results raised questions about the pace of its artificial-intelligence investment and a sharp decline in South Korea’s technology-heavy KOSPI added to broader market pressure.

According to Cointelegraph, BTC fell nearly 3% after its latest advance was rejected near $84,840 on Bitstamp. The cryptocurrency later returned to around $81,500, giving back the gains recorded during the previous session. The retreat left Bitcoin below a downward-sloping resistance line that has continued to mark a sequence of lower highs.

Tesla results shift the market mood

Tesla reported third-quarter revenue of $28.05 billion, slightly below the $28.13 billion estimate cited by Bloomberg. The more closely watched figure for markets was capital expenditure, or capex, which came in at $4.73 billion. That was substantially below the $7.96 billion projection.

Capital expenditure refers to spending on long-term assets and projects. In Tesla’s case, the lower-than-expected figure prompted questions about how aggressively the company is expanding its artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Ryan Lee, senior vice president of product and strategy at Direxion, told Reuters that the result suggested a less extensive commitment to the AI investment race than investors might have expected from Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk.

Musk said during Tesla’s earnings call that spending would increase through 2028. He said the company’s capex was ending up lower than anticipated for now, would become more meaningful the following year and could reach “the tens of billions” in 2028, according to Bloomberg.

Tesla’s report contrasted with stronger signals from SpaceX and General Motors earlier in the week, which had helped support a rally in equities and cryptocurrencies. The lower capex figure instead contributed to concerns about the AI sector as markets continued to recover from the previous week’s sell-off in Asian technology stocks.

South Korean stocks add to risk pressure

South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index fell 3.52% on Thursday. The technology-heavy benchmark struggled to maintain its recovery after dropping to 5,460 points the previous week, its lowest level since late July.

The decline in the KOSPI provided another sign of weakness in technology-linked markets while Bitcoin was attempting to extend its own recovery. Although cryptocurrency and stock markets do not move in lockstep, simultaneous pressure across risk-sensitive assets can influence trading sentiment.

Bitcoin’s failure to remain above the $84,840 area was technically important because the level was close to the downward trend line that had capped advances on the three-day chart. Crypto trader and analyst Rekt Capital had previously argued that Bitcoin needed to break that resistance before a sustained upward move could develop.

Leverage makes the reversal more vulnerable

The pullback also followed a sharp increase in open interest across cryptocurrency trading platforms. CoinGlass data showed total Bitcoin open interest reaching $55.95 billion late Tuesday, after rising 4.5% over 24 hours to its highest level since Sept. 25.

Open interest measures the value of outstanding derivatives contracts. A rapid increase can indicate that more leveraged positions are being built, leaving the market more exposed to cascades of forced buying or selling if prices reverse. In this case, the rejection near resistance occurred after open interest had climbed, a combination that can make a short-term decline more pronounced.

The area between $80,000 and $81,500 has previously been identified as important support because it contains the cost basis for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. An ETF is a market-traded vehicle that provides exposure to an underlying asset or group of assets. The support zone therefore remains a reference point for traders watching whether the retreat stabilizes.
