Bitcoin futures open interest has risen above $50 billion for the first time this year, a development Anchorage Digital research chief David Lawant views as a sign of market vitality rather than an immediate warning about excessive leverage. His assessment, reported by Bitcoin Magazine, also points to stronger spot-market activity and thinner order books as signs that Bitcoin may be entering the early stages of a new upturn.
What the futures data shows
Open interest measures the value of outstanding futures contracts. It can increase as traders add positions, making it an important indicator of market participation and leverage. The return of Bitcoin futures open interest above $50 billion therefore shows that significant capital is active in the derivatives market again.
The level alone does not determine whether the market is healthy. High open interest can reflect growing participation, but it can also leave a market more exposed to rapid position liquidations if prices move sharply. Lawant’s interpretation is that the current increase is evidence of vitality when considered alongside other market-structure indicators.
Spot activity and liquidity in focus
Lawant’s analysis goes beyond derivatives positioning. He highlights rising spot trading volume and thinning order books as signals that Bitcoin is moving through an early market upturn. Spot volume reflects activity in the underlying asset, while an order book shows available buy and sell orders at different prices.
A thinner order book means that relatively large trades may have a greater effect on prices because fewer orders are available to absorb them. In this context, the combination of higher spot volume and reduced displayed liquidity is being treated as evidence of changing market conditions, rather than relying on price alone.
The discussion also covers the liquidity absorption ratio, a measure used to consider how market liquidity absorbs trading activity. Lawant connects this type of market-structure analysis with the question of whether Bitcoin is shifting from one market regime to another.
What the options market adds
Bitcoin’s options market is another part of the assessment. The discussion describes a Bitcoin options market worth $60 billion and examines its volatility curve, including why short-dated Bitcoin volatility remained elevated in 2026.
Options can provide information that a simple price chart does not, including how traders are positioning for future volatility and how expectations differ across maturities. Lawant also discusses results from Anchorage’s 37,000 covered-call backtests, as well as the changing role of exchange-traded funds and treasury companies in Bitcoin price discovery.
These indicators do not establish a guaranteed direction for Bitcoin. Instead, they offer different ways to assess participation, liquidity, leverage and expectations. The central conclusion presented in the report is that the combination of derivatives activity, spot-market volume, order-book conditions and options signals is consistent with Bitcoin entering a more bullish regime.
