Bitcoin and Global Risk Assets Slide as Gold Gains and Treasury Yields Fall

Bitcoin and other risk assets fell as copper, Asian stocks and Nasdaq futures weakened, while gold rose and Treasury yields declined. CoinDesk linked the move to broad risk reduction, inflation concerns and uncertainty over interest rates, with traders awaiting the U.S. producer price index.

Bitcoin and Global Risk Assets Slide as Gold Gains and Treasury Yields Fall

Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies fell on Oct. 15 as investors reduced exposure to riskier assets across markets. Copper futures, Asian equities, Nasdaq futures and risk-sensitive currencies also weakened, while gold advanced and U.S. Treasury yields declined—an indication that money was moving toward assets often viewed as safer.

According to CoinDesk, bitcoin dropped more than 2% over the previous 24 hours to $80,955.28 in the market snapshot cited in its report. Ether and XRP declined more sharply, while solana also moved lower. The simultaneous retreat across crypto, equities and industrial commodities suggested that the selling was broader than a cryptocurrency-specific move.

Risk assets retreat across markets

Copper futures fell nearly 1% after dropping 1.6% on Wednesday. Copper is widely watched by investors as an indicator of expected global economic activity because of its use across manufacturing, construction and other parts of the economy. A decline in copper alongside weaker stocks and cryptocurrencies pointed to reduced appetite for assets that tend to perform better when growth expectations are strong.

Asian shares were pulled lower by a selloff in South Korean chipmakers. Nasdaq-linked futures also declined, while risk-sensitive currency pairs, including the Australian dollar against the Swiss franc, weakened. Taken together, these moves showed pressure across several parts of the market rather than a reversal limited to one asset class.

At the same time, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell eight basis points to 5.08%, extending its retreat from a recent high of 5.36%. Bond yields and prices generally move in opposite directions, so the decline in the yield indicated that Treasury prices were rising. Treasuries are commonly treated as a haven during periods of market stress.

Gold also rose 1%. Like government bonds, the precious metal is often sought when investors become more cautious about riskier holdings. The combination of falling yields and a stronger gold price was consistent with a shift toward defensive positioning.

Inflation and interest-rate expectations

The market move followed a hotter-than-expected U.S. consumer price index report released on Wednesday. Higher-than-anticipated inflation can raise concern that the Federal Reserve may need to keep interest rates high or increase them, which can weigh on assets whose valuations depend on future growth.

However, expectations for an immediate rate increase appeared to ease after briefly rising following the inflation data. CME FedWatch futures put the probability of the Federal Reserve lifting its benchmark rate into the 4%–4.25% range later in October at 29%. The remaining probability implied that rates would stay at 3.75%–4%. The hike probability had briefly approached 50% after the CPI report before falling back.

The next major inflation-related data point was the U.S. producer price index, scheduled for Thursday. The measure tracks prices received by producers and can provide another indication of inflationary pressure in the supply chain. A stronger-than-expected reading could intensify the cautious tone in markets, according to the report.

InvestingLive analyst Giuseppe Dellamotta described the backdrop as resembling a stagflationary environment, in which risk assets and the U.S. dollar underperform while gold does better. Stagflation generally refers to the combination of weak economic growth and persistent inflation. The source material did not identify a single confirmed cause for the broad market decline.

Bitcoin levels and the wider crypto market

Traders were also watching whether a selloff in artificial-intelligence-related investments would continue to spread through markets. The AI trade refers to investments connected to companies and assets expected to benefit from growth in artificial intelligence. A continued unwinding could add pressure to other growth-sensitive investments, including technology shares and cryptocurrencies.

Analysts at 10x Research said they preferred holding bitcoin while that process continued, provided bitcoin remained above $78,000. They also favored using ether as a hedge for long bitcoin positions. These comments reflected the analysts’ stated market view, not a guarantee about future prices.

Ether was separately testing a support area near $2,350, according to CoinDesk’s technical-market discussion. That zone was described as combining a horizontal trendline that had acted as support since Aug. 23 with an ascending trendline tracing the advance from July lows. A move below both lines would indicate weaker demand and could leave the cryptocurrency exposed to additional losses, the report said.

Moneyiar market picture

Moneyiar data recorded bitcoin at $81,977.55 at 20:59 on Oct. 15, 2026, with a 24-hour gain of 0.39% and a seven-day gain of 0.27%. This differs from the earlier CoinDesk snapshot of $80,955.28 and its reported 24-hour decline of more than 2%, reflecting the different times represented by the two market observations.

The broader session remained defined by a contrast: risk-sensitive assets were under pressure, while gold and U.S. Treasuries attracted demand. Investors’ next focus was the producer price index and whether inflation data, market-rate expectations and the AI-related selloff would reinforce or ease the defensive shift.
