Bitcoin Holds Above $80,000 as Traders Await Fed Decision and Midterm Elections

Bitcoin recovered toward $80,500 after briefly falling below $80,000, with traders watching the Federal Reserve’s rate decision and November midterms. Potential changes to crypto legislation, continued spot ETF outflows and bitcoin’s distance from its 2025 record are shaping the market backdrop.

Bitcoin steadied around $80,500 on Tuesday after recovering from an early-session decline, as traders assessed the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy decision and the possible effect of November’s midterm elections on crypto legislation.

The cryptocurrency moved between roughly $79,400 and $80,800 during the day, according to Bitcoin Magazine Pro data, and was about 0.3% higher over the previous 24 hours by mid-afternoon Eastern time. The recovery kept bitcoin above $80,000, a level that has become an important near-term reference point for the market.

The move came after bitcoin slipped below that threshold on Monday amid broader risk reduction. Investors were contending with concern over valuations in the artificial-intelligence sector and higher oil prices, while spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds continued to experience outflows. Even so, the recent selling has remained orderly rather than turning into a broad panic. Bitcoin has mostly traded between approximately $79,000 and $81,000 this week.

Fed decision puts rates back in focus

The Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting is scheduled for October 27 and 28, with the interest-rate decision due on Wednesday. The central bank has kept its target range at 3.75% to 4% after raising rates in September. Officials have also indicated that another increase could be required before the end of the year.

That backdrop leaves the Fed’s decision and the communication around it as the next major test for risk-sensitive assets. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of speculative investments by making cash and other interest-bearing assets more attractive and by tightening financial conditions. A more hawkish-than-expected message could therefore put renewed pressure on bitcoin, potentially sending it back toward $80,000 or below.

A decision to hold rates, combined with a less aggressive tone, could instead give buyers more room to test the roughly $88,000 area reached earlier this autumn. Traders are expected to focus particularly on comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the post-decision press conference, looking for clues about the possibility of a December increase.

Market expectations previously leaned toward a rate hold when they were last clearly reported in early October, but those figures are now dated and may have changed.

Midterms could affect crypto legislation

The November 3 midterm elections introduce a second source of uncertainty for the digital-asset market. Prediction markets have pointed to a possible Democratic win in both chambers of Congress. One Polymarket reading cited in recent coverage assigned Democrats a 90% probability of taking the House and a 62% probability of winning the Senate.

For the crypto industry, one of the most immediate policy issues is the proposed market-structure legislation known as the CLARITY Act. The bill could influence how digital-asset businesses operate, but its progress has already slowed. A Senate cloture vote failed in September, with disagreements over ethics provisions and stablecoin yield among the issues dividing lawmakers.

TD Cowen analysts have warned that the election outcome could leave the legislation stalled for two years. They described Democratic control of both chambers as the most negative scenario for bitcoin among the political outcomes under discussion. A divided Congress in which Republicans retain the Senate was viewed as more favorable, while a Republican sweep was considered the strongest outcome for crypto policy.

The political debate matters to market participants because regulation can affect the operating environment for exchanges, token issuers and other crypto businesses. Bitcoin and other risk assets have also historically tended to perform better during the 12 months following midterm election cycles, although the source material does not establish that this pattern will determine the current market’s direction.

Longer-term performance remains under pressure

Bitcoin’s short-term stability contrasts with a weaker longer-term picture. The cryptocurrency’s record high was approximately $126,000 in October 2025, leaving it around 30% below that level. The asset has also been roughly 30% lower than it was a year earlier, according to the report.

At the time of the report, bitcoin was trading at approximately $80,600. Moneyiar market data recorded bitcoin at $80,430.5068 on October 25 at 22:39 Iran Standard Time, down 0.08% over 24 hours and 1.32% over seven days. The same Moneyiar snapshot showed NEAR Protocol at $4.6166906773, up 3.36% over 24 hours and down 6.21% over seven days, while RedStone stood at $0.1452603192, down 2.72% over 24 hours and up 6.36% over seven days. These figures are Moneyiar data at the stated time and may differ from later market prices.
