Bitcoin remained near $82,000 on Monday as U.S. technology stocks recovered from the previous week’s sharp decline. The cryptocurrency briefly moved above $83,000 overnight before retreating, while the Nasdaq gained as much as 1.8% in late-morning trading and investors returned to beaten-down artificial-intelligence shares.
The rebound came as some of the pressure from last week’s market panic eased. However, higher Treasury yields, weak housing sentiment and continuing geopolitical concerns showed that investors were still navigating significant risks. According to CoinDesk, bitcoin was up about 0.8% over 24 hours near the opening of U.S. trading, while Ether, Solana and XRP were also slightly higher.
Bitcoin rebound follows technology-stock recovery
Bitcoin rose from an overnight low near $80,700 to just above $83,000 before falling back toward $82,400. The $83,000 level was still below the area near $84,000 that had turned the cryptocurrency lower twice during the previous week.
The move tracked gains in U.S. equity futures. Nasdaq 100 futures rose 1.1%, ending a five-session slide in which they had fallen 5.5%. S&P 500 futures gained 0.5%, while an exchange-traded fund tracking chipmakers rose 3% before the market opened. Once trading began, the Nasdaq was up 0.85% and the S&P 500 was 0.4% higher, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.25%.
By late morning, the Nasdaq had extended its gain to 1.8% and the S&P 500 was up 0.9%. Gains were concentrated in technology and artificial-intelligence stocks, including Micron, Intel, SanDisk and AMD, which were rising between 4% and 7% at the time of the report.
Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at FxPro, described bitcoin’s move as a rebound rather than a confirmed return to upward momentum. He noted that bitcoin’s 50-day moving average was near $81,000 and had supported recent declines. Holding that level kept the medium-term trend intact, but a stronger move would be needed to demonstrate renewed momentum.
Rates and housing data keep pressure on markets
The improvement in equities coincided with a rise in Treasury yields after investors had moved into government bonds during the previous week’s stock-market selloff. The 10-year Treasury yield increased 3.3 basis points to 5.133%, after briefly approaching 5% the week before. The reported probability of a rate increase at the Federal Reserve’s next meeting rose to 18%, compared with a low of 12% during the prior week.
Higher borrowing costs were also reflected in the latest U.S. homebuilder survey. The National Association of Home Builders’ Housing Market Index fell to 29 in October from 32 in September, missing forecasts for an unchanged reading. A level below 50 indicates that negative sentiment dominates.
The index’s current-sales component dropped to 33, while expectations for sales over the next six months fell to 32. Buyer traffic declined to 18. The survey also found that 43% of builders were cutting prices, the highest proportion in the period covered by the report, from 2020 through 2026.
The Cboe Volatility Index, commonly called Wall Street’s fear gauge, fell 5% to just below 19 after rising more than 20% on Friday to nearly 20. The index reflects expected S&P 500 volatility over the following four weeks.
Crypto treasury companies continue buying
Corporate crypto-treasury activity remained active despite the market volatility. Strategy acquired 267 bitcoin during the previous week, taking its holdings to 848,517 coins. The company also repurchased $193 million of its STRC preferred stock and increased the authorized size of the buyback program to $3 billion from $2 billion.
Strategy’s buyback activity has drawn criticism because STRC had recently traded close to its $100 par value. The security carries a 12% dividend yield and was trading at $98.99, up 1.3% on Monday, according to the report. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor defended the approach, saying, “You don’t build a market worth trillions without investing billions.”
Strive added 1,223 bitcoin, bringing its holdings to 36,818. The company was expected to receive another $600 million in buying capacity later in the week from proceeds of its SATA preferred-stock offering.
Ethereum-focused treasury company Bitmine also reported another purchase, acquiring 12,535 ETH during the previous week for approximately $30.4 million. Its total holdings reached 6.04 million ETH, leaving it about 64,000 tokens short of its stated goal of owning 5% of Ethereum’s supply.
