Bitcoin Holds Steady as Traders Await the Federal Reserve’s Next Rate Decision

Bitcoin is trading in a narrow range as investors await the Federal Reserve’s October 28 rate decision. Analysts disagree over whether the calm signals a possible bull market or reflects broader risk aversion, while options expiry, U.S. midterms and ETF flows could shape the next move.

Bitcoin Holds Steady as Traders Await the Federal Reserve’s Next Rate Decision

Bitcoin and the wider cryptocurrency market have entered a period of unusually limited movement, leaving traders focused on the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision and several other events that could determine the market’s next major direction.

Bitcoin has moved by no more than 6% over the past month, according to Decrypt data cited in reporting published on October 23. At the time of that report, the cryptocurrency was trading at about $81,735, down 1.2% on the day. The five largest cryptocurrencies had each moved by less than 2% over the previous seven days, while the Crypto Fear and Greed Index stood at a neutral 47.

The subdued conditions have produced a market that analysts describe as dull, but they disagree on what that means. Some view the lack of large price swings as a constructive pause that can precede stronger gains. Others say it reflects caution across global markets and does not, by itself, provide a clear signal about what comes next.

Analysts see different meanings in a quiet market

Jake Koch-Gallup, a senior research analyst at Blockworks, told Decrypt that a quiet market is often a positive sign because periods of low volatility do not tend to last. He said comparable periods in the past had been followed by price swings of about 30% in either direction within several months.

André Dragosch, head of research at Bitwise Europe, described the current phase as “constructive.” In his view, long periods of uneventful trading followed by a small number of large moves are a pattern often seen in the early stages of a bull market.

Dragosch also said Bitcoin’s declines during its current recovery had been less severe than those seen in previous cycles. He contrasted that with elevated volatility in oil, semiconductor stocks and government bonds. The comparison, he said, suggested that investors were increasingly prepared to hold their exposure through weakness. He characterized that behaviour as resilience rather than euphoria.

Carlos Guzman, vice president of research at crypto trading firm GSR, offered a more neutral assessment. He said the market’s lack of direction was neither inherently positive nor negative, attributing it instead to a risk-off mood across global markets. Concerns about the broader macroeconomic environment and fears involving artificial-intelligence stocks have taken attention away from crypto, he said.

Guzman added that a significant breakout would be difficult while that wider risk-off sentiment remained in place, leaving markets choppy.

Why the Federal Reserve is central to the outlook

Dragosch said Bitcoin was in “wait and see mode” as investors assessed two competing forces: tighter global financial conditions and the possibility that slower economic growth could eventually lead central banks to change course.

The Federal Reserve is the immediate focus. The U.S. central bank raised interest rates in September for the first time since 2023, while the Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% in September. The Fed’s next rate decision is scheduled for October 28. Koch-Gallup said investors were reluctant to make a major bet before that announcement.

Bitcoin is also trading near what Dragosch called the market’s “economic midpoint”—a level at which approximately half of invested capital is in profit and half is at a loss. At that point, he said, neither buyers nor sellers have a strong incentive to push the market sharply away from its current level.

Buying interest has not disappeared. Guzman said Bitcoin briefly fell below $80,000 the previous week but quickly attracted buyers. CoinGlass data also showed an inflow of $665.20 million into BlackRock’s Bitcoin exchange-traded fund on Monday. However, Guzman said inflows had not been consistent enough to produce a sustained rally.

Events that could break the deadlock

Several closely watched events are approaching. Koch-Gallup identified the Federal Reserve’s October 28 decision, the October 30 expiry of Bitcoin options worth $11.69 billion and the U.S. midterm elections on November 3 as potential catalysts for a significant market move.

He said an unchanged Fed policy combined with continued ETF inflows would point toward an upward break. By contrast, another rate increase could bring a Bitcoin support range of $75,000 to $77,000 back into focus. These were his market scenarios, not a forecast or recommendation.

Guzman also pointed to a possible resolution of tensions around the Strait of Hormuz as another event that could influence markets. Dragosch said derivatives markets were pricing in considerably less volatility than on-chain data indicated, making options unusually inexpensive for investors seeking either protection or exposure to a larger move.

While major cryptocurrencies have moved sideways, some smaller assets have performed differently. Decrypt data showed the Brave browser token BAT had risen almost 87% over the previous month to a market capitalization of $263 million. Collector Crypt, a card-collection marketplace, had gained 95% to reach a $318 million market capitalization.

Moneyiar market picture

Moneyiar data at 08:19 on October 24, 2026, showed Bitcoin at $80,680.66, down 1.28% over 24 hours and 1.16% over seven days. NEAR Protocol was priced at $4.5654, down 7.62% over 24 hours and 10.36% over seven days. ARK stood at $0.2111, up 10.92% over 24 hours and 18.54% over seven days.

The figures illustrate that the calm described for Bitcoin and the largest cryptocurrencies has not applied evenly across the entire digital-asset market. For now, however, traders’ attention remains concentrated on whether the Fed decision and other upcoming catalysts will end Bitcoin’s wait-and-see phase.
