Bitcoin Nears $83,000 as AI-Fueled Tech Rally Lifts Crypto; Zcash Jumps on Upgrade Plans

Bitcoin moved back toward $83,000 during Asian trading on Wednesday as strong technology-company results revived interest in artificial-intelligence stocks and helped lift broader risk assets. Zcash outperformed the major cryptocurrencies after developers scheduled the activation of its next network upgrade, while analysts said Bitcoin’s extended decline may be approaching an end.

Bitcoin gains as technology stocks rebound

Bitcoin rose 1.3% to just above $82,700 in Asian morning trading, according to CoinDesk. The move came as stronger-than-expected results from SpaceX and Super Micro Computer renewed enthusiasm for the artificial-intelligence trade, a theme that has helped drive technology markets.

The recovery was visible across Asia. South Korea’s Kospi gained 3.7%, while Taiwan’s Taiex advanced 1.4%. SpaceX rose 8% in extended trading and Super Micro surged 16%, while Nasdaq 100 futures climbed 1%.

The technology rally was not universal. Australian data-center developer Nextdc fell 40% after cutting its outlook, underscoring the different expectations facing companies tied to the expansion of AI infrastructure.

Bitcoin’s move higher came alongside gains across much of the digital-asset market. Ether rose 2% to about $2,450. HYPE and Dogecoin each added more than 3%, XRP increased nearly 3% to $1.33, and BNB and Solana gained between 1% and 2%. TRON was broadly flat in the market snapshot reported by CoinDesk.

Zcash leads gains after NU7 timetable

Zcash was the strongest major cryptocurrency in the report, rising 11% to approximately $1,260 after its developers set the mainnet activation height for NU7. An activation height is the specific block number at which network nodes switch to the rules of a new upgrade.

NU7 is designed to reduce the interval between Zcash blocks from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. In practical terms, the change is intended to allow payments to receive confirmation three times faster. The upgrade has been running on Zcash’s test network since early October.

The proposal also directs 60% of transaction fees into a reserve that will be paid out over time. The scheduled change gives users and network participants a defined point at which the new rules are expected to take effect, although the source material did not provide the exact activation block or a calendar date in this report.

Moneyiar’s market data, recorded at 08:28-08:29 on October 21, showed Zcash at $1,274.0754759843, up 12.82% over 24 hours and 1.63% over seven days. Bitcoin was priced at $83,192.433574946, with a 24-hour gain of 2.14% and a seven-day decline of 0.66%. TRON stood at $0.3307429832, down 0.29% over 24 hours and 0.38% over seven days, while Cronos traded at $0.0580696833, up 2.52% over 24 hours but down 2.83% over seven days.

Analysts watch Bitcoin’s next test

The latest advance has prompted renewed discussion about whether Bitcoin’s long period of weakness could be losing momentum. Hashdex analysts said in an email cited by CoinDesk that Bitcoin’s bear phase had lasted 359 days as of September 30. That compares with previous downturns lasting 361, 377 and 411 days since 2011.

Another measure highlighted by the analysts was the share of Bitcoin held by short-term holders, who are considered more likely to sell during a market decline. Their holdings had fallen to 16% of Bitcoin’s supply, the lowest level since January 2023.

Hashdex said Bitcoin would need to recover above $84,000 before the Federal Reserve’s October 27-28 meeting to demonstrate renewed strength. That level is therefore being watched as a near-term marker by the analysts, rather than as a forecast or guaranteed outcome.

Other markets reflected a more complicated backdrop. Brent crude rose above $110 a barrel as attacks on ships near the Strait of Hormuz threatened energy shipments and U.S. industry data pointed to another decline in inventories. The dollar strengthened slightly, while U.S. Treasuries surrendered some of the gains recorded on Tuesday. The combination of stronger technology shares, rising oil prices and shifting bond-market conditions left investors weighing renewed appetite for risk against continuing geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures.
