Bitcoin Extends October Slide as Traders Assess Chance of a 2026 ‘Uptober’ Recovery

Bitcoin has started October with losses, but analysts say the cryptocurrency could still recover during a historically strong month. Technical signals, easing oil prices and recent quarterly gains are prompting debate over whether a market bottom may be forming.

Bitcoin began October under pressure, falling 2% in 24 hours to just above $82,423 on Monday and losing 3% over the previous week, according to Bitcoin Magazine. The decline has put the cryptocurrency’s reputation for typically strong October performance under scrutiny, although analysts say the month could still produce a recovery.

October Starts Weakly After a Strong September

Bitcoin has historically performed well in October. Data from Coinglass shows that the cryptocurrency ended eight of the past 10 Octobers with gains. That record has led market participants to refer to the month as “Uptober.”

The pattern was interrupted last year. Bitcoin reached a record high of $126,080 before its market turned lower after October 10. A major liquidation event followed tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, wiping out leveraged crypto positions and liquidating more than $19 billion in digital-asset bets.

Bitcoin then spent much of 2026 in a bear market. More recently, however, the cryptocurrency recorded its strongest quarter in years and gained during September, a month that has historically been difficult for bitcoin. Those developments have encouraged some analysts to argue that the broader downturn may have ended.

Analysts Look for Signs of a Bottom

Japanese asset-management platform XWIN, writing for data provider CryptoQuant, said bitcoin’s early October decline did not necessarily rule out a later advance.

“Now, signs of a potential bottom are emerging,” XWIN said in a note. The firm pointed to market pricing on October 12, which implied an approximately 18% chance of a Federal Reserve interest-rate increase in October. It also noted that Brent crude had eased from nearly $110 to about $103.

Oil prices can affect bitcoin indirectly. When energy costs rise, investors may anticipate tighter monetary policy as central banks attempt to contain inflation. Higher expected interest rates can weigh on risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies. XWIN said an “Uptober” did not have to consist of uninterrupted gains, arguing that a correction could help establish the basis for a subsequent move higher.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates last month, but bitcoin rose after that decision rather than being pressured by it. Other analysts have also highlighted bitcoin’s move above its 365-day moving average, a technical indicator that has coincided with the beginning of bull markets in previous cycles.
