Bitcoin Open Interest Rises $2.3 Billion as Traders Increase Bullish Exposure

Bitcoin derivatives activity has strengthened as the cryptocurrency moved above $86,000, with traders adding positions ahead of a U.S. jobs report. Open interest rose by about $2.3 billion from Sept. 30, while higher funding costs indicated growing demand for positions that benefit from a bitcoin price increase.

According to CoinDesk, total open interest reached approximately 653,000 BTC, valued at about $56.2 billion, from roughly 626,000 BTC, or $53.9 billion, on Sept. 30. The increase amounted to about 27,000 BTC, or 4.3%.

Derivatives activity expands as bitcoin climbs

Open interest measures the total value of futures and perpetual contracts that remain outstanding. It increases when traders open new positions and falls when contracts are closed or settled. The measure shows how much exposure is in the market, but not whether that exposure is bullish or bearish.

In this case, the rise in open interest occurred alongside an increase in bitcoin’s price. Bitcoin moved from around $83,500 on Sept. 30 to approximately $86,500, suggesting that newly established positions were contributing to the advance rather than the move being driven only by the closing of existing trades.

The activity came ahead of Friday’s U.S. jobs report, an economic release that traders were watching while adding to derivatives positions. The source material does not identify whether the new contracts were concentrated in futures or perpetuals, but it highlights a broader increase in bitcoin market exposure.

Funding rates show a higher cost for bullish bets

The perpetual funding rate also moved higher, rising from roughly 3% to 10% over the same period. Funding payments are exchanged periodically between traders in perpetual futures markets to help keep those contracts close to bitcoin’s spot price.

When the funding rate is positive, traders with long positions—those positioned for a price increase—pay traders holding short positions. The move higher therefore indicates that demand for bullish exposure had strengthened and that traders were willing to pay more to keep those positions open.

That signal comes with a qualification. Higher funding rates increase the cost of maintaining long positions. If bitcoin reverses sharply, traders using leverage may be more exposed to losses or forced position reductions. Rising open interest by itself does not establish that prices will continue higher, since the metric includes both long and short contracts.

The recent increase also started from a relatively subdued level. Open interest stood near 625,000 BTC at the end of September, close to its lowest point in 12 months. The recovery in speculative activity is therefore taking place from a low base, even though the combination of rising prices, open interest and funding rates points to a more bullish positioning mix.

Crypto-linked shares move higher in premarket trading

The move in bitcoin derivatives was accompanied by gains in several U.S.-listed companies with links to digital assets. Strategy, described in the source material as the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, and Strive each rose around 3% in Friday’s premarket trading.

Coinbase and Robinhood gained approximately 2%. The reported premarket moves were:

  • Strategy: about 3% higher
  • Strive: about 3% higher
  • Coinbase: approximately 2% higher
  • Robinhood: approximately 2% higher

These companies have different business models and levels of exposure to the cryptocurrency market, but their shares were moving in the same direction as bitcoin-linked market activity before the U.S. session opened.
