Bitcoin’s Quantum Risk Raises Economic Concerns as Crypto Industry Expands

Bitcoin’s potential quantum-security problem is becoming an economic concern as institutions assess its long-term viability. Meanwhile, Ripple won a US banking charter, USDC expanded its European trading lead and VanEck launched an ETF with a small Bitcoin allocation.

Bitcoin’s Quantum Risk Raises Economic Concerns as Crypto Industry Expands

Bitcoin’s exposure to potential quantum-computing attacks is increasingly being discussed as an economic issue, not only a technical one. The concern is that uncertainty over the network’s ability to adopt quantum-resistant security could affect institutional demand well before quantum machines are capable of compromising Bitcoin.

At the same time, major developments across the crypto industry are reshaping regulation, stablecoin competition and the way traditional portfolios gain digital-asset exposure. According to Cointelegraph, the latest developments include warnings from Stacks founder Muneeb Ali, a federal banking charter for Ripple, stronger euro trading for Circle’s USDC and a new multi-asset ETF from VanEck that includes Bitcoin.

Quantum concerns could influence institutional demand

Ali said Bitcoin needs a credible plan for moving toward quantum-resistant security, with meaningful progress needed by 2028 and a completed transition targeted for 2030. He referred to guidance from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, while also warning that advances in artificial intelligence could accelerate the timetable.

Quantum computers are not simply faster versions of today’s machines. Their potential ability to solve certain mathematical problems more efficiently has raised questions about the cryptographic systems used to protect digital assets. In Bitcoin’s case, the issue is tied to the long-term security of addresses and transactions.

Ali’s concern is that the market may react to the possibility of a future security problem before the technology itself becomes an immediate threat. Institutional investors often assess not only current performance but also whether an asset can remain secure and operational over many years. For investors viewing Bitcoin as protection against currency debasement, doubts about its long-term security could weaken that investment case.

The practical challenge is also linked to Bitcoin’s governance process. Even if developers agree on an approach, implementing a major change could take years, followed by a period in which holders would need to move their coins to quantum-resistant addresses. Ali said the network has only a limited window to prepare, given its history of slow and contentious upgrades.

The concern comes despite the growth of institutional Bitcoin products. US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds have accumulated more than $104 billion in net assets, according to BitBo data cited in the source material. Ali also warned that a breakthrough capable of undermining Bitcoin could affect confidence across the broader cryptocurrency market.

Ripple receives approval for a national trust bank

Ripple has received final approval from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to establish Ripple National Trust Bank. The decision removes the last regulatory obstacle after the company received conditional approval in December 2025.

The bank will operate under federal supervision and is expected to manage the reserves supporting Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin. It will also act as a collateral trustee for tokenholders and provide digital-asset custody services.

RLUSD itself will continue to be issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, which is regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse welcomed the decision, saying that crypto and banks work better together.

The approval follows similar final approval granted to Circle in July. Coinbase, Crypto.com and Stripe-owned Bridge remain at the conditional-approval stage. A national trust bank is different from a conventional commercial bank: it generally cannot accept deposits or issue loans and does not have Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation coverage.

USDC gains ground in Europe as MiCA changes trading

Circle’s USDC has overtaken Tether’s USDt in euro-denominated stablecoin trading. Data from Kaiko showed USDC holding 56% of this market, compared with 10% in January 2024.

The shift accelerated after several large cryptocurrency exchanges restricted USDt trading for customers in the European Economic Area to comply with the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, commonly known as MiCA. USDC’s euro order books are now about 40% deeper than USDt’s, indicating greater available liquidity for traders in that market.

The change in euro trading does not mean USDC is larger globally. Tether remains the leading stablecoin worldwide, with a circulating supply approximately 2.5 times that of USDC. The European Banking Authority has also designated USDC as the bloc’s first “significant e-money token,” bringing additional regulatory oversight.

Kaiko said similar effects could emerge from the US GENIUS Act, depending on how exchanges apply its stablecoin requirements.

VanEck adds a small Bitcoin allocation to a broader ETF

VanEck, which manages $244 billion in assets, has launched the VanEck Wealth Builder ETF, traded under the ticker WBMO on the New York Stock Exchange. The actively managed fund combines stocks and bonds with real assets and a limited Bitcoin allocation.

The ETF targets a 2% Bitcoin weighting, with the allocation allowed to range from 1% to 5%. It does not hold Bitcoin directly. Instead, it obtains exposure through a spot Bitcoin exchange-traded product and invests in a combination of VanEck and third-party ETFs.

The launch brings VanEck’s existing Wealth Builder model portfolios into a single exchange-traded fund. The firm’s head of multi-asset solutions, David Schassler, said the traditional 60/40 portfolio was designed for a different economic environment and argued that real assets could help portfolios address a wider range of conditions. Bitcoin is presented as a small component of that broader allocation rather than the fund’s central holding.
