Bitcoin rose back above $81,000 after the US stock market opened on Thursday, as economic data showed stronger-than-expected growth and inflation remained in line with forecasts. The move came despite a sharp decline in Alphabet shares following the technology company’s disappointing third-quarter results.

According to Cointelegraph, BTC/USD reached $81,547 on Bitstamp after falling to $79,607 following Wednesday’s daily close. The rebound put Bitcoin near an important weekly resistance area, leaving traders focused on whether the cryptocurrency could hold and reclaim higher levels before the week ended.

US growth beats expectations while inflation matches forecasts

The latest US figures presented a picture of an economy expanding faster than analysts had expected. The final estimate for third-quarter gross domestic product showed annualized growth of 3.4%, above the 3.2% forecast.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, closely followed by Federal Reserve policymakers, increased 0.5% from August and was up 3.6% year on year in September. The core PCE measure, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 3.1% from a year earlier.

The combination of firmer economic growth and inflation data that did not exceed expectations helped support Bitcoin during Thursday’s trading session. Market participants were also assessing the Federal Reserve’s latest policy decision. At its meeting on Wednesday, the central bank kept its interest-rate target unchanged at 3.75%-4%, matching market expectations.

In a subsequent statement, Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said economic activity was expanding at a strong pace but described inflation as elevated. He also pointed to resilient domestic spending, strong productivity growth and robust capital investment. According to the statement, job gains had kept pace with the workforce and the unemployment rate had changed little.

Alphabet weakness adds pressure to US stocks

Bitcoin’s recovery took place while US equities opened lower. Alphabet led the decline, with its shares falling 12% after the company missed expectations for third-quarter earnings and revenue.

The contrasting market moves showed that Bitcoin’s immediate price action was more closely aligned with the day’s macroeconomic data than with weakness in one of the largest technology stocks. Stronger GDP growth can affect expectations for interest rates and broader risk appetite, while PCE inflation remains an important measure for assessing the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook.

The data did not remove uncertainty from markets. The Federal Reserve said geopolitical developments were among the factors keeping uncertainty elevated, while also noting that economic activity and consumer spending remained resilient. Higher energy costs and their effect on parts of the economy were also referenced in the economic discussion cited by Cointelegraph.

$81,400 remains a key weekly level

Bitcoin’s advance still left it below a technical level identified by crypto trader and analyst Rekt Capital. The analyst said Bitcoin had been moving unevenly around weekly levels near $80,400 and $81,400, and argued that a close above $81,400 would be important for the weekly candle.

That level matters because reclaiming a former resistance area can indicate that buyers have regained control of the short-term price structure, while failure to hold it can leave the market trading within the recent range. Rekt Capital described $81,400 as the nearest hurdle for buyers as the weekly close approached.

Bitcoin was also on course for a 3.3% decline in October at the time of the report. Cointelegraph noted that October has delivered average Bitcoin returns of 26% since 2010, although historical averages do not determine the result of any individual month.
