Bitcoin Retreats From $84,000 as Oil Rebounds and Spot ETF Outflows Reach $681 Million

Bitcoin pulled back after nearing $84,000 as oil prices recovered and U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs posted $681 million in weekly outflows. Analysts are watching $82,000 support and U.S. inflation data due October 14 for the next major market catalyst.

Bitcoin Retreats From $84,000 as Oil Rebounds and Spot ETF Outflows Reach $681 Million

Bitcoin gave up part of an early advance after briefly approaching $84,000, while a recovery in oil prices and heavy withdrawals from U.S.-listed spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds added to concerns about the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin traded near $83,400 at 10:30 UTC, below an early-session high of about $84,250, according to CoinDesk data.

The move came as traders assessed shifting energy prices, cautious institutional flows and the next major U.S. inflation release. Ether, XRP and Solana also followed a similar pattern, advancing early before giving back some gains.

Bitcoin’s early rally fades as oil turns higher

Bitcoin’s initial rebound coincided with a drop in oil prices during Asian trading hours. The decline followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday that his administration had reached an agreement for Russia to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel fuel to international and domestic markets.

The arrangement represented a partial easing of U.S. sanctions on Russian oil imports. Trump also said Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate “energy ceasefire” intended to stop attacks on energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said they had not been consulted, however, and Russian military strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid have continued.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell by more than 1% to below $90 a barrel early in the session. They later recovered to $92.63 a barrel, up 0.8% on the day. The reversal in oil prices accompanied Bitcoin’s retreat from its intraday high.

Oil is closely watched by financial markets because energy prices can influence inflation expectations and the outlook for interest rates. For crypto markets, changes in broader risk sentiment and expectations for monetary policy can affect demand for assets such as Bitcoin, although the source material does not establish a direct cause for this session’s price movements.

Spot bitcoin ETFs record largest weekly outflow since June

The more persistent concern for analysts was the scale of withdrawals from U.S.-listed spot bitcoin ETFs. The funds recorded $681 million in net outflows last week, according to data provider SoSoValue. It was the largest weekly withdrawal since June, with most of the outflows occurring on Wednesday and Thursday.

Spot bitcoin ETFs hold Bitcoin directly and give investors exposure through a listed investment vehicle. As a result, their inflows and outflows are closely followed as an indicator of demand from investors using traditional market infrastructure, including institutions.

“ETF flows remain volatile. US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw heavy outflows on October 7 and 8, signaling cautious institutional sentiment,” Vikram Subburaj, chief executive of India-based Giottus Exchange, told CoinDesk.

Purvang Mashru, lead analyst at BitDelta India, also pointed to the ETF withdrawals while describing the wider macroeconomic environment as challenging. He said Treasury yields reached 24-year highs during the week ended October 9. Higher yields can increase the appeal of interest-bearing assets and contribute to a more cautious backdrop for risk-sensitive markets.

$82,000 support and inflation data in focus

Despite the ETF outflows, market gains were not limited entirely to Bitcoin and the largest cryptocurrencies. Mashru said the recovery had broadened across major digital assets, with nine of the top 10 advancing over the previous 24 hours. Avalanche led the group with a 5.1% gain to $10.91, while Chainlink rose 2.4% to $13.35. Solana added 1.2%, and BNB, XRP, Dogecoin and Cardano also gained. Tokens including AVAX, NEAR, FIL and ZRO posted gains of 8% to 12% over the same period, according to the source material.

Both analysts identified $82,000 as a key support level for Bitcoin. In market terminology, support is a price area where buyers may emerge; the analysts said Bitcoin bulls would need to defend that level to avoid deeper losses. This is a market observation, not a forecast.

The next major macroeconomic event identified by the analysts is the U.S. inflation data due on October 14. The release may provide markets with fresh information about price pressures and the broader economic backdrop, but the source material does not specify how the figures will affect Bitcoin.
