Bitcoin’s Inflation-Fueled Rise Above $85,000 Fades as Treasury Yields Stay High

Bitcoin briefly rose above $85,000 after cooler-than-expected U.S. inflation data reduced expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate increase. The rally faded as 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields remained near levels last seen around 2002, limiting demand for riskier assets.

Bitcoin’s Inflation-Fueled Rise Above $85,000 Fades as Treasury Yields Stay High

Bitcoin briefly climbed above $85,000 after U.S. inflation data came in cooler than expected, but the move lost momentum as Treasury yields remained close to multi-year highs. The cryptocurrency was trading just above $83,700 during Thursday’s Asian morning hours, after reaching about $85,500 on Wednesday.

Softer inflation lifts bitcoin briefly

The market reaction followed the release of the August Personal Consumption Expenditures, or PCE, report. The PCE index is a closely watched measure of consumer inflation and is among the indicators considered by the Federal Reserve when assessing interest-rate policy.

Prices increased 3.4% from a year earlier in August, while the measure excluding food and energy rose 3.0%, according to the source material. Both readings were described as softer than expected.

The report reduced expectations of another Federal Reserve interest-rate increase in October and made December appear to investors as the more likely next policy move, said Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, in an email to CoinDesk.

Investors initially treated the data as supportive of riskier assets. Bond yields fell temporarily, and bitcoin moved back above $85,000. Lower yields can make risk assets more attractive because they reduce the relative appeal of interest-bearing government debt and ease financial conditions. In this case, however, the improvement did not last.

Bond yields limit the rebound

Late trading swings on Wall Street reversed much of bitcoin’s advance. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was around 5.28%, close to its peak on Wednesday and near its highest level since 2002. The 30-year yield steadied at 5.62% after reaching its highest level since 2002 during New York trading.

The elevated yields remained the central obstacle for bitcoin’s recovery. According to the market assessment cited by CoinDesk, a single softer inflation report was not enough to keep bitcoin above $85,000 while the 10-year yield stayed near 5.3%. A sustained decline in that yield would provide more room for a rally to hold, the report said.

Oil prices declined, helping pause the selloff in bonds, while the U.S. dollar strengthened. Those moves added to a mixed backdrop for cryptocurrency markets, despite the initial relief created by the inflation figures.

Mixed performance across major cryptocurrencies

Bitcoin was up 0.4% at just above $83,700 in the Thursday Asian session. Other major digital assets moved unevenly:

  • HYPE rose 3% to about $89, leading the major cryptocurrencies listed in the report.
  • Dogecoin gained nearly 2% to just below 10 cents.
  • Ether, BNB, TRX and Zcash each added less than 1%.
  • XRP was unchanged at $1.50.
  • Solana fell nearly 1% to just below $119.

The different performances showed that the inflation-driven move was not uniform across the crypto market. Bitcoin’s initial jump was closely tied to changing expectations for U.S. monetary policy, while individual tokens recorded smaller and mixed moves.

Wider market backdrop and Moneyiar data

The broader risk mood was somewhat stronger in Asian trading. Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.8%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.4%. Japan’s Nikkei advanced 2.7% and South Korea’s Kospi increased 1.2%, after an upbeat forecast from Micron Technology supported chip stocks.

Alphabet rose 1.5% in extended trading as Google began rolling out Gemini 4 Argon, described in the source material as its new flagship artificial-intelligence model.

Moneyiar market data at 08:58-08:59 on October 1, 2026, showed bitcoin at $83,505.32, up 0.56% over 24 hours and down 0.06% over seven days. NEAR Protocol was priced at $5.22, up 2.10% in 24 hours and 22.81% over seven days. Sentient stood at $0.0221, gaining 4.07% over 24 hours and 3.08% over seven days, while Rain was at $0.0122, down 1.20% over 24 hours but up 1.13% over seven days.

The contrasting market signals leave Treasury yields as the key focus for bitcoin’s next move in the immediate market picture. The inflation report provided an initial boost, but the persistence of high long-term borrowing costs quickly reduced the effect. CoinDesk reported the price action and market reaction.
