Bitcoin Slips Below $80,000 After US Producer Inflation Surges

Bitcoin briefly fell below $80,000 after September US PPI rose 6.3%, far above the 5.3% expectation and marking its biggest annual increase since December 2022. Analysts are now watching support near the $76,144-$78,459 moving-average range.

Bitcoin Slips Below $80,000 After US Producer Inflation Surges

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 on Thursday after US producer-price data exceeded expectations by a wide margin, adding to pressure already building across cryptocurrencies and other risk assets. The September Producer Price Index rose 6.3% on an unadjusted 12-month basis, compared with market expectations of 5.3%, according to reporting by Cointelegraph.

US producer inflation delivers a major upside surprise

Bitcoin briefly declined as much as 1.8% during the day, reaching its lowest level since September 18, according to TradingView data cited in the report. The cryptocurrency later recovered to trade near $81,000, but the move below the closely watched $80,000 level highlighted the market’s sensitivity to fresh inflation figures.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the September PPI increased 6.3% over the 12 months through September. That was 100 basis points above the expected 5.3% reading and marked the largest 12-month increase since December 2022, when the index rose 6.4%.

Core PPI, which excludes food, energy and trade services, also came in above expectations. It rose 5%, compared with the 4.4% forecast. The monthly increase in the overall index was described in the official release as the largest advance since a 1.7% rise in March 2022.

PPI measures changes in the prices received by domestic producers for their output. Investors often monitor it as an indicator of inflationary pressure earlier in the supply chain. A stronger-than-expected reading can affect expectations about interest rates and the broader economic outlook, although the market response can also depend on bond yields, fiscal developments and other asset-price movements.

Inflation pressure meets broader market weakness

The PPI figures arrived one day after US consumer-price data also exceeded forecasts. The higher-than-expected Consumer Price Index had already weighed on cryptocurrencies and other risk-sensitive assets, according to the source material.

Markets were also dealing with weakness in technology stocks. The KOSPI Composite Index in South Korea fell 7.5% on Thursday, contributing to pressure across risk assets.

Economist Mohamed El-Erian called the PPI result even more striking than the CPI outcome. However, US government bond yields were not rising alongside the stronger inflation readings. The 10-year Treasury yield was down almost 3% at the time of the report, standing at its lowest level since September 23.

Robin Brooks, a former chief foreign-exchange strategist at Goldman Sachs, said the relationship between upside economic-data surprises and movements in the 10-year yield had weakened. The 30-day correlation he cited had fallen from close to 0.6 earlier in 2026 to just below zero at the end of August. Brooks attributed the change to markets placing greater emphasis on the US government’s handling of the federal budget deficit.

That divergence matters because bond yields are an important part of the backdrop for risk assets. In this instance, inflation data pointed in one direction while the Treasury market moved in another, leaving investors to weigh competing signals rather than responding to the PPI figure alone.

Bitcoin support levels return to focus

Bitcoin’s retreat brought two longer-term technical levels back into view: the 21-week exponential moving average at $76,144 and the 50-week exponential moving average at $78,459. Exponential moving averages give greater weight to more recent prices and are commonly used by traders to track momentum and potential support or resistance.

Trader and analyst Rekt Capital said Bitcoin could retest both averages while maintaining its broader bullish structure. The analyst described a move below those levels as a possible volatile retest that could establish a pullback low. Rekt Capital also noted that similar deviations have occurred in early-stage bull markets, while pointing out that Bitcoin had not yet completed a bullish crossover between the two averages.

Bitcoin also remained below the $82,500-$82,800 area, which had been identified as an important support zone in recent weeks. Analyst Aksel Kibar said the latest weekly close, around $83,700, did not show enough strength to confirm a breakout. In his analysis, a weekly close within the broader range could leave Bitcoin consolidating between $60,000 and $82,800, with $75,000 identified as a level that would negate a rectangle-bottom reversal pattern.

These technical levels are areas highlighted by analysts, not guarantees of future price movements. The immediate market focus remained on whether Bitcoin could reclaim higher levels after its brief move below $80,000 or instead revisit the trend lines around the upper-$70,000s.
