Bitcoin came under renewed pressure after the opening of Friday trading in the United States, briefly falling below $81,000 as equities weakened and oil prices climbed sharply. The move placed a widely watched technical level back at the centre of the market, while rising energy prices added to concerns about risk appetite.
According to Cointelegraph, Bitcoin fell to $80,988 before recovering to about $81,600 at the time of its report. Traders were watching whether the cryptocurrency could regain its 50-day simple moving average, which stood at $81,781.
Stocks weaken while oil prices accelerate
The decline in Bitcoin occurred alongside a softer opening for major US stock indexes. The S&P 500 was down 0.6% and the technology-focused Nasdaq Composite had fallen 0.2% at the time of reporting. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was lower by 1.4%.
The market was also monitoring US government bond yields. The 10-year Treasury yield remained below 5%, after reaching 4.939% on Thursday, its lowest level since Sept. 23. Bond yields can influence the appeal and valuation of risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies, so their direction is closely followed by traders.
Oil prices moved in the opposite direction. Brent crude rose almost 3% to $116 a barrel, its highest level since March 19 and the first time it had reached that price since then. West Texas Intermediate crude also moved above $102 a barrel, marking its highest level since Sept. 16.
The rise in energy prices came as markets assessed tensions connected with the US-Iran war and concerns that the United States could renew military strikes on Iran around the midterm elections. Those developments contributed to a more cautious tone across markets, with investors weighing the potential effect of a sustained oil-price increase on the wider economy.
Economist Robin Brooks said oil prices were rising even though flows through the Persian Gulf were close to pre-war levels for many countries, while Saudi Arabia’s flows had exceeded its pre-war average. In analysis published that day, he described the gap between prices and flows as an unusually large risk premium being incorporated by markets.
Bitcoin focuses on the 50-day average
Bitcoin’s 50-day simple moving average became an immediate reference point after the price moved below it. A simple moving average tracks the average price over a specified period; traders often use it as a way to assess the recent trend and potential areas where buying or selling interest may emerge.
Keith Alan, co-founder of crypto trading platform Material Indicators, said Bitcoin bulls were attempting to reclaim the $81,781 level by the daily close. He warned that failure to do so could open the way to a test of support between $78,000 and $80,000.
The $80,000-to-$81,500 area was already being monitored because it represents the aggregate cost basis for investors in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, according to earlier reporting. A cost basis is the average price at which investments were acquired. In this context, the zone is being treated as an area where ETF investors’ positions could become relevant to market behaviour.
Bitcoin ETFs hold Bitcoin through a fund structure that can be traded on an exchange, giving investors exposure to the asset without directly managing the cryptocurrency. The reported concentration of investor cost bases does not guarantee that the area will hold as support, but it helps explain why traders were paying close attention to the range.
Moneyiar market picture
Moneyiar data at 08:09 on Oct. 24, 2026, showed Bitcoin at $80,636.94, down 1.09% over the previous 24 hours and 1.17% over the past seven days. That reading was below both the $81,781 50-day average cited in the report and the wider $80,000-to-$81,500 area identified as important support.
Other assets in the Moneyiar data set showed sharply different performance. AI Rig Complex was priced at $0.0585222189 at 08:08 on Oct. 24, up 4.16% over 24 hours and 52.84% over seven days. Ren was listed at $0.8044417073 at 07:54 on Oct. 20, with a 24-hour gain of 29,270.65% and a seven-day increase of 28,690.8%. These figures are Moneyiar market data at the stated times and cover different reporting timestamps from the Bitcoin reading.
For Bitcoin, the immediate focus remained whether it could recover the 50-day average or instead revisit lower support, while stock-market weakness, bond yields and developments affecting crude oil continued to shape the broader risk environment.
