Bitcoin slips below $84,000 as oil rises after tanker attacks

Bitcoin fell below $84,000 during Asian trading on Wednesday as rising oil prices, Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar added pressure to risk-sensitive markets. The decline followed an escalation in Iranian attacks on tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz.

Bitcoin dropped about 1.5% to just above $84,200 after trading near $86,600 on Tuesday. It briefly fell to approximately $83,840, moving below the $84,000 threshold that FxPro had identified as a level that could indicate sellers were gaining control.

Other major cryptocurrencies also moved lower. Dogecoin recorded the steepest decline among the largest tokens, falling 5% to roughly 9 cents. Ether lost 3.5% to about $2,610, while XRP declined nearly 3% to around $1.46. HYPE dropped close to 4% to approximately $91. BNB, Solana, Zcash and Tron each fell between 1% and 2.5%, according to CoinDesk data.

Oil and traditional markets set the tone

Energy prices rose as reports of stepped-up attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz heightened concern in financial markets. Brent crude gained almost 1% to about $101.50 a barrel.

The move in oil coincided with gains for the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields. The dollar strengthened against all other Group-of-10 currencies, while the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note increased by three basis points to 5.31%.

Higher oil prices can affect financial markets because they raise the cost of energy and may add to inflation pressures. Government bond yields and the dollar are also closely watched by investors because changes in borrowing costs and currency values can influence demand for assets such as cryptocurrencies and stocks.

Asian equities weakened despite record closing levels for the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 in the United States. The MSCI Asia Pacific gauge fell 0.6%, with technology shares in South Korea and Hong Kong turning lower. U.S. stock futures also gave up earlier gains.

Traders await the Federal Reserve minutes

The next major event for markets is the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting, scheduled for later Wednesday. At that meeting, the central bank raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point.

Recent weaker jobs data has made another rate increase this month appear less likely, Dan Khus, chief analyst at LVRG Research, said in an email to CoinDesk. He said traders were assessing whether the meeting record would suggest that policymakers were willing to wait or still considered one more increase before the end of the year.

The minutes could provide more detail on the debate behind the September decision. Markets had already expected the quarter-point increase, so attention has shifted toward the Fed’s view of future policy and the balance between inflation risks and economic weakness.

The $83,000 level comes into focus

FxPro said a sustained move below $83,000 could confirm that sellers had taken control and potentially put Bitcoin on a rapid path toward $80,000. After its early-Wednesday low, Bitcoin remained about $1,200 above that level in the source report.

The technical threshold matters because traders often monitor previous lows and widely discussed price levels when judging whether a decline is temporary or part of a broader move. It does not guarantee what Bitcoin will do next, but it has become a focal point as markets absorb geopolitical developments, higher oil prices and changing expectations for U.S. interest rates.
