Bitcoin fell below $84,000 on Wednesday after a rapid decline triggered a large wave of liquidations in leveraged cryptocurrency positions. The move briefly took BTC to $83,560, while traders focused on heavily leveraged short positions that appeared on the Hyperliquid exchange shortly before the drop.
According to Cointelegraph, Bitcoin lost as much as 2.3% across two hourly candles before recovering toward $84,000. CoinGlass data showed that liquidations of crypto long positions over 24 hours reached $550 million, highlighting the scale of the move for traders betting on further price gains.
Hyperliquid positions draw attention
Onchain data identified four wallets using USD Coin (USDC), a stablecoin designed to maintain a value close to the US dollar, to open short positions covering 148.49 BTC on Hyperliquid. The positions used 40x leverage and appeared immediately before the overnight decline, according to data from Lookonchain and other analysts.
The timing of those trades prompted market analysis to focus on whether the positions were connected to the sell-off. The source material does not establish who controlled the wallets or whether the trades caused Bitcoin’s decline.
Bitcoin had already struggled to move above $86,500 on Tuesday, as sell orders, or ask liquidity, became heavier on exchange order books. After leveraged long positions were liquidated, open interest began to recover across the 21 exchanges tracked by CoinGlass. Open interest refers to the total value of outstanding derivatives contracts. It rose from about $54.2 billion to $55.3 billion between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. UTC, a six-hour period.
Key Bitcoin support levels remain in focus
Bitcoin briefly held its 21-day simple moving average, which stood near $83,850. The moving average was identified as an important short-term support level for bullish traders. At the time covered by the report, Bitcoin was trading around $84,000 and remained close to that threshold.
A further level at $82,500 was described as important for the broader uptrend. That price is part of an inverse head-and-shoulders pattern still developing on Bitcoin’s weekly chart. Bitcoin last traded at that level on Sept. 28.
Trader and analyst Rekt Capital said a daily or three-day close above $86,700 would be needed to confirm that the upward continuation remained intact. Without that close, the market lacked lower-time-frame confirmation above the level, according to his commentary.
Moneyiar market picture
Moneyiar data at 10:14 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2026, showed Bitcoin at $83,798.55, down 2.69% over 24 hours but up 0.11% over seven days. Hyperliquid’s HYPE token was priced at $89.88, down 3.57% in 24 hours and up 4.03% over seven days.
The figures illustrate that Bitcoin’s sharp daily decline came alongside a modest weekly gain, while the token associated with Hyperliquid also recorded a short-term fall. These market readings are snapshots at the stated time and do not determine the cause of either asset’s move.
