BlackRock Says AI Agents Could Become a New Source of Crypto Demand

BlackRock says AI agents could become a major source of crypto demand as they begin making frequent, low-value payments for data, computing and other services. Its research favors stablecoins for everyday transactions and bitcoin for longer-term value preservation.

Artificial intelligence could become an important new source of demand for cryptocurrencies as software agents begin making payments and purchasing services without direct human involvement, according to research cited by BlackRock and reported by Bitcoin Magazine.

Why AI Agents May Need Crypto

BlackRock’s report, titled “The Machine-Native Economy,” argues that existing payment systems were largely designed around human users. Card networks and automated clearing houses typically involve onboarding processes, transaction fees and settlement procedures that can make very small payments impractical or slow.

That limitation could become more significant as AI agents take on tasks such as booking travel, buying data and renting computing capacity. These systems may need to make frequent payments at any time of day, including transactions worth less than one cent.

The report says blockchain-based payment infrastructure is suited to this type of activity because it can support high-frequency, machine-to-machine transactions. Potential examples include payments for application programming interface calls, on-demand data and computing services charged according to usage.

“As AI agents become more capable and as their real-world applications expand, they increasingly demand payment and asset infrastructure designed natively for machine-speed commerce,” BlackRock said in the report.

Bitcoin, Stablecoins and the Digital Economy

The research cited by BlackRock suggests that different types of digital assets could serve different purposes in an economy increasingly operated by software. Controlled simulations from the Bitcoin Policy Institute generally favored stablecoins for routine payments, while bitcoin was preferred for preserving value over longer periods.

Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value, commonly against a traditional currency. Bitcoin, by contrast, is a native cryptoasset whose market price fluctuates. For AI systems, the distinction could matter: stablecoins may be more useful for predictable everyday settlement, while bitcoin could serve as a longer-term asset.

BlackRock said broader AI adoption and more capable “agentic” systems could make digital assets part of the economic infrastructure supporting these activities. Its report pointed to stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets and other cryptoassets used in blockchain settlement as areas that could gain utility.

The argument represents a shift in focus from crypto demand driven primarily by individual investors. In BlackRock’s view, software itself could become a meaningful user of digital-asset networks if AI agents increasingly transact independently.

BlackRock’s Existing Crypto Position

BlackRock has already backed bitcoin and applications built on blockchain technology, including the tokenization of assets. In 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission approved the company’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund.

According to the source material, the fund has attracted the largest investment and trading volume among U.S. bitcoin ETFs. It recorded the most successful debut in ETF history and now manages more than $67 billion in assets. BlackRock has also described bitcoin as an asset class of its own and said investors use it as a potential hedge against debt crises.
