BlackRock and Ondo Point to a Future of Onchain Investment Portfolios

BlackRock and Ondo Finance have created three tokenized investment portfolios, offering a glimpse of how blockchain could eventually handle complete strategies rather than individual assets. The model could simplify rebalancing, broaden access and support more automated portfolio management.

BlackRock and Ondo Point to a Future of Onchain Investment Portfolios

BlackRock’s work with Ondo Finance suggests tokenization could soon move beyond putting individual stocks, bonds and funds on a blockchain. The companies have created three professionally designed portfolio strategies that are represented by individual transferable tokens, offering a possible new model for how investors access, hold and manage diversified investments.

From individual assets to complete strategies

According to CoinDesk, the portfolios were developed by BlackRock for Ondo’s Intelligent Portfolios product. They are built around three objectives: high income, diversified growth and high growth. Rather than requiring an investor to purchase and periodically rebalance each underlying holding, the approach represents the overall strategy with one blockchain-based token.

The basic idea is not entirely unfamiliar. Mutual funds and exchange-traded funds have long allowed investors to own a basket of assets through a single product. The difference is that a tokenized portfolio exists on blockchain infrastructure. That could allow it to move between compatible wallets and platforms, remain visible through onchain records, and potentially be used as collateral or integrated into other digital financial products.

This represents a shift in emphasis. Much of the tokenization market has focused on individual instruments, including Treasury funds, private-credit products, stocks and ETFs. The BlackRock-Ondo offering instead places the investment strategy itself onchain.

Pantera, a crypto investment firm, described the development in a recent report as a move “from single securities to onchain portfolios.” For investors, its analysts said, the practical effect could be fewer individual positions to monitor and fewer rebalancing decisions to make themselves.

There is already a substantial market for professionally assembled investment combinations. Model portfolios—pre-built mixes of funds and other assets used by wealth managers—held about $9.8 trillion in assets in June, according to Broadridge. Tokenization could give asset managers another method for distributing those strategies.

Lisa O’Connor, BlackRock’s global head of model portfolio solutions, said in the announcement that tokenization creates new ways to deliver portfolio strategies through digital infrastructure.

Different routes to automated portfolio management

BlackRock and Ondo are not the only firms testing this model. In August, digital asset manager Bitwise introduced Automated Token Portfolios with Coinbase and Glider, a company backed by a16z. The product allows eligible non-U.S. investors to follow Bitwise-designed portfolios of tokenized stocks while the individual assets remain in their own wallets. Glider’s software adjusts the holdings to maintain the target allocations.

The distinction between the two approaches is important. Ondo packages exposure to the complete portfolio in one transferable token. Bitwise keeps the tokenized stocks separately in the investor’s wallet while software manages the allocation. Both, however, point toward portfolio management becoming software that can operate directly on blockchain-based assets.

The longer-term possibility is a portfolio that can be adjusted continuously rather than only when an investor or adviser places a trade. John Hoffman, who was newly appointed Ondo’s head of portfolio products in June, said the company’s eventual aim was professionally managed portfolios that respond in real time to market conditions and changes in data.

That outcome would require more than tokenized securities. Hoffman said the industry would also need a wider range of assets onchain, prime-brokerage infrastructure and asset-management strategies capable of being executed natively on blockchain networks.

Broader access and the role of software

Tom Staudt, president and chief operating officer of ARK Invest, told CoinDesk that tokenization could eventually affect not only how investors buy funds, but also which assets can be included in their portfolios. Traditional portfolio construction developed when ordinary investors had access to a narrower selection of investments. Private equity, private credit and crypto were less accessible, international markets were harder to reach, and the fund universe was smaller.

Tokenization could provide common digital infrastructure for a broader range of assets. Combined with artificial intelligence, that infrastructure could eventually support software that designs portfolios around an investor’s objectives, risk tolerance or tax circumstances. The important limitation, Staudt noted, is that recommendations are of limited use if the underlying investments cannot actually be accessed.

For asset managers, tokenized portfolios could also make it easier to combine strategies from different providers. That may change how firms distribute products, compete for clients and work with one another. For investors, the potential result is a broader menu than the traditional mix of stocks, bonds and funds.

Dan Romero, chief business officer at Stripe-backed blockchain Tempo, compared the development with the growth of stablecoins. Stablecoins place digital representations of cash on blockchain networks, while tokenization can bring more investment assets onto the same infrastructure. Together, they could allow developers to create financial products designed for specific users and purposes.

The immediate BlackRock-Ondo products are an early example rather than a completed transformation. They show how a single token can represent a professionally constructed strategy, but the more ambitious version—portfolios that are continuously monitored, rebalanced and tailored—depends on additional market infrastructure and a larger selection of tokenized assets.
