Jack Dorsey’s Block gave one ComplexCon attendee a full bitcoin during the annual cultural convention in Los Angeles, as the payments company used Cash App and an interactive game to present cryptocurrency to visitors. The coin was worth $85,000 at the time of the giveaway, according to Bitcoin Magazine.
Bitcoin Giveaway at Lightning Lake
Block’s Cash App operated a booth at the event featuring “Lightning Lake,” a fishing-themed game through which participants could win small amounts of bitcoin. One player, however, received the much larger prize of 1 BTC.
The promotion was part of Block’s presence at ComplexCon, a yearly event organized by Complex Networks that brings together culture, shopping and entertainment. The company said its aim was to make bitcoin accessible to people who may not have used it before, while giving attendees a practical and entertaining way to interact with the cryptocurrency.
Maria Pesce, Block’s head of Bitcoin marketing, told Bitcoin Magazine that the company wanted bitcoin to be “approachable, tangible and fun.” She said participants could move from having no experience with bitcoin to using it as a payment method during their visit to the booth.
Block’s Broader Bitcoin Strategy
The giveaway fits into a wider effort by Block to encourage bitcoin use through its businesses and products. Cash App enables users to buy, send and receive bitcoin, while Square point-of-sale terminals support bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network, a system designed to facilitate faster transactions on the Bitcoin network.
Block, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, also launched an advertising campaign in October focused on encouraging people to use bitcoin as a medium of exchange. The company’s stated ambition is to make bitcoin part of everyday payments rather than limit it to an asset held for investment.
Jack Dorsey, who left Twitter in 2021 to concentrate on payments and bitcoin adoption, has repeatedly expressed support for bitcoin becoming a global currency and “everyday money.” ComplexCon provided Block with a setting outside the traditional financial sector to introduce the cryptocurrency to a new audience.
The booth also attracted celebrity attention. North West, the daughter of Kanye West, and rapper French Montana were seen trying the Lightning Lake game, according to the report.
