A Brooklyn man involved in a $16 million scam targeting Coinbase users has received a sentence of up to 12 years, according to Decrypt. The scheme involved impersonating Coinbase support staff and gaining access to roughly 100 customer accounts. Funds were then drained from those accounts, with the defendant later acknowledging details of the operation in personal messages. Those messages also indicated that he lost about $6 million of the proceeds through gambling. The case highlights the risks posed by fraudulent customer-support outreach in cryptocurrency, where attackers can exploit users’ trust in platform representatives to obtain access to accounts and assets. The report did not provide additional details about the sentencing terms or the identities of other people who may have been involved. The information comes from Decrypt’s report published September 24, 2026.
