Charles Schwab Survey Finds 60% of Crypto Investors Plan to Buy More

Charles Schwab’s 2026 Modern Wealth Survey found that 60% of Americans who already own cryptocurrency plan to invest more over the next year. That exceeds the comparable shares among ETF, stock, bond and mutual-fund investors, while younger Americans continue to show the strongest crypto ownership.

A majority of Americans who already own cryptocurrency expect to increase their holdings over the next year, according to new research from Charles Schwab. The survey indicates that crypto investors are showing stronger plans to add to their positions than owners of stocks, exchange-traded funds, bonds or mutual funds.

Crypto leads planned investment increases

Charles Schwab’s 2026 Modern Wealth Survey found that six in 10 current cryptocurrency investors intend to invest more during the coming 12 months. That was the highest proportion recorded among the investment categories included in the research.

By comparison, 56% of ETF owners said they planned to add to their holdings, followed by 52% of stock investors. The corresponding figures were 42% for bond investors and 41% for mutual-fund investors.

Joe Vietri, Charles Schwab’s head of digital assets, said younger investors were driving much of the interest and momentum in cryptocurrency. He also described the broader trend as evidence that crypto is increasingly being considered alongside, rather than instead of, traditional investments.

Broadening interest in digital assets

The survey found that 20% of Americans currently own cryptocurrency. An additional 20% said they do not own crypto but are interested in buying it. Among people who invest, nearly half reported holding cryptocurrency.

Millennials were identified as the generation most likely to own crypto. Their ownership rate was more than four times the rate reported among Baby Boomers, according to the research.

The findings come as Charles Schwab expands its involvement in the digital-asset market. The company, described in the report as the largest U.S. custodian for registered investment advisors, began a phased rollout of Schwab Crypto to retail clients earlier this year. The service provides direct access to bitcoin trading, as well as educational material and professional support.

Charles Schwab also offers cryptocurrency-linked ETFs, bitcoin futures and the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index ETF. Chief Executive Rick Wurster has said Schwab clients hold more than 20% of all crypto exchange-traded products across the industry.
