Citi and Coinbase are introducing a payment arrangement designed to let Citi’s business clients accept stablecoins without directly holding tokens, opening crypto accounts or handling wallet addresses. According to Decrypt, Coinbase converts incoming stablecoins into dollars in the background, while Citi deposits the resulting funds through the normal banking system.
The arrangement also works in the opposite direction for companies operating on Coinbase. Those businesses can open accounts that function like bank accounts through Citi’s banking infrastructure, with incoming dollars automatically converted into stablecoins.
For the customer receiving or sending money, the process is intended to look familiar. A Citi client can offer stablecoin payments and receive dollars, while a Coinbase-based company can receive dollars and deliver stablecoins. The conversion takes place between the two financial systems rather than requiring the business or its customers to manage the crypto transaction themselves.
A payments system designed to stay out of sight
Stablecoins are digital tokens generally designed to maintain a stable value relative to a traditional currency, most commonly the U.S. dollar. They can move across blockchain networks, but using them has traditionally required businesses to understand wallets, token transfers and crypto custody.
The Citi-Coinbase setup is built to remove those steps for participating companies. A business does not need to keep a stablecoin balance or open a separate crypto account under the arrangement described in the source material. Coinbase handles the conversion into dollars before Citi deposits the money as a conventional payment.
The system is also intended to support faster movement of funds than a traditional wire transfer. The source material describes stablecoins moving in seconds, while a wire can take two days. It does not provide a specific settlement timetable for the new service, however.
Coinbase says more than 150 million people worldwide hold stablecoins. The significance of the arrangement is therefore not simply that two financial companies are supporting another crypto product. Instead, stablecoin payments could be offered to a wider customer base while remaining largely invisible to the businesses processing them.
Wider crypto market and corporate activity
The Citi-Coinbase announcement came as major crypto assets rebounded. The source market snapshot put Bitcoin at $84,400, up 2%, while Ethereum rose 3% to $2,730 and Solana gained 1% to $120. HYPE fell 1% to $88.70 and Zcash dropped 8% to $1,450. Oil was down 4% at $92, gold was unchanged at $4,185, and U.S. stock futures were modestly higher, with Dow futures up 0.15% and Nasdaq futures up 0.3%.
Corporate demand for digital assets also featured prominently in the report. Strategy bought 1,665 Bitcoin for $142.7 million at an average price of $85,681, taking its holdings to a record 847,666 Bitcoin. The company also spent $151.7 million buying back STRC. Strive added 1,107 Bitcoin for $94.5 million, lifting its holdings to 27,462 coins, while Bitmine purchased 17,362 Ether for about $47 million.
Exchange-traded fund flows were positive in the same snapshot. Bitcoin ETFs recorded $31 million in net inflows on Monday, Ethereum ETFs attracted $17 million and Solana products received $8 million.
Other developments included Goldman Sachs making its $100 billion Treasury fund available to crypto firms through the Lynq settlement network without tokenizing the fund. NEAR Intents said it rejected more than $50 million in transfers linked to the Bitget hack and froze about $503,000 during a swap. Chainlink also launched CCIP 2.0, which allows companies to add their own security checks to transfers between blockchains.
