Coinbase Wins CFTC Approval to Launch US Derivatives Clearinghouse

Coinbase has secured approval from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission to operate its own derivatives clearing organization, adding a major piece to the exchange’s domestic trading infrastructure. The authorization allows Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps, but excludes leveraged products.

Approval completes Coinbase’s US derivatives setup

The registration took effect Monday, according to Cointelegraph, giving Coinbase control over clearing alongside the other parts of its derivatives operation. Those businesses include Coinbase Financial Markets Inc., which acts as its futures broker, and Coinbase Derivatives LLC, its exchange.

“Today’s CFTC approval completes Coinbase’s end-to-end derivatives infrastructure, enabling us to bring more regulated derivatives products to market with native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement,” Coinbase General Counsel Molly Abraham said.

A derivatives clearing organization stands between the buyer and seller after a derivatives trade. It supports settlement and helps manage counterparty risk—the possibility that one side may fail to meet its obligations. Coinbase’s new clearinghouse will therefore handle a central function in the processing of eligible contracts, although the approval does not extend to clearing leveraged products.

Coinbase expands beyond crypto trading

The approval marks another step in Coinbase’s development from a crypto trading platform into a provider of financial-market infrastructure. Through its derivatives exchange, the company lists US-regulated futures linked to cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ether, as well as commodity and equity-index futures. It also offers long-dated, perpetual-style crypto futures.

Fully collateralized derivatives are backed by collateral covering the relevant obligations, while leveraged products generally allow traders to take positions larger than the funds posted upfront. The CFTC authorization described in the announcement applies only to the former category and to the other products specifically listed in the registration.

By bringing clearing into its own group, Coinbase now has a more integrated US derivatives structure spanning brokerage, exchange and clearing. The authorization concerns the infrastructure used to clear contracts; it does not, by itself, permit the clearinghouse to clear leveraged products.

Crypto companies build in-house infrastructure

Coinbase’s move follows a broader push by crypto companies to control more of the US derivatives process. Kraken’s parent company, Payward, completed its acquisition of Bitnomial in May. That transaction gave Payward a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and futures brokerage.

The developments come as crypto firms seek a larger role in regulated financial markets. Coinbase’s approval gives it a clearing organization of its own, while its existing exchange and brokerage businesses remain separate entities within its derivatives operation.
