Cointelegraph Seeks Buyer After Google Penalty Cuts Organic Traffic by 80%

Cointelegraph is seeking a buyer after a sharp decline in website traffic weakened the cryptocurrency news publisher, according to a person familiar with the matter cited by CoinDesk. The potential sale price has not been disclosed, and the company has publicly denied that it is for sale.

Traffic collapse puts pressure on crypto publisher

The main challenge for Cointelegraph has been the loss of visibility in Google search. The outlet experienced an approximately 80% decline in organic traffic after Google imposed a manual penalty in October 2025. The penalty caused the website to disappear from Google’s search results, according to the source material.

Similarweb data cited in the report show the scale of the change. Cointelegraph recorded more than 12 million monthly visits in December 2024. By September 1, its monthly traffic had fallen to just above 700,000.

The company’s difficulties came as user interest in crypto news also weakened during an extended period of depressed and largely flat cryptocurrency prices. Lower attention to the sector affected multiple digital-asset newsrooms, not only Cointelegraph.

Company denies it is for sale

The person familiar with the matter did not reveal how much Cointelegraph was being offered for, speaking anonymously because the discussions were private. Cointelegraph did not initially respond to requests for comment.

After the report was published, however, the company posted on X: “We are not for sale.” That statement contrasts with the account that the publisher is looking for a buyer, leaving the status of any potential transaction unresolved.

Cointelegraph is known for using cartoon-style characters and illustrations in its coverage. Founded in 2013, it has more than 200 employees, according to its LinkedIn page.

The site also faced a separate security incident before the Google penalty. Its website was compromised by a front-end exploit in June of the previous year, according to the source material. No further details about that incident were provided.

Ownership and current crypto market picture

Cointelegraph’s MENA franchise was last acquired in July 2022 by Luna Media Corporation. That acquisition was intended to support Luna Media’s global and regional expansion.
