Crypto Groups Spend $176 Million on Midterms as Voters Rank Industry Issues Low

Crypto advocacy groups have poured about $176 million into more than 100 U.S. midterm races this election cycle, but a new survey suggests that direct support for crypto and decentralized finance is not a leading concern for most voters.

Voters Favor a Broader Innovation Message

Only 13% of Americans said it was extremely or very important for political candidates to support the growth of emerging financial technologies such as blockchain, cryptocurrency and decentralized finance, according to an Ipsos survey conducted for the DeFi Education Fund, a crypto policy advocacy organization.

A broader policy message attracted substantially more support. Some 35% of respondents said it was very important for candidates to ensure that people developing the next generation of financial technology are encouraged to do so in the United States. That was the highest-ranked position tested in the survey.

Support for that broader message was stronger among Republicans than Democrats, at 45% and 30%, respectively. By contrast, the narrower question about backing crypto showed little partisan difference: 15% of Republicans and 13% of Democrats considered it very important.

The survey also found that 26% viewed support for new rules allowing innovation in the financial system as very important. Separately, 63% said the financial system needs an upgrade to address threats including artificial intelligence and cybercrime, while 49% said the government should not determine which financial products people can invest in.

Industry Spending Concentrates on Key Races

The survey results contrast with the scale of political spending by the crypto sector. According to Decrypt, citing a Reuters review, crypto groups have spent approximately $176 million across more than 100 midterm contests during this cycle.

Fairshake, a crypto-focused super political action committee, and its affiliates accounted for about $150.8 million of that amount through October 20. One Fairshake affiliate reported spending more than $46 million against former Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio’s Senate race.

The figures show that industry organizations are treating the elections as important for future policy, even though relatively few voters identify direct support for crypto as a top campaign priority.

Policy Stakes After Clarity Act Vote

The spending comes after the Clarity Act, legislation that would have established federal rules for crypto markets, failed to clear a key Senate vote in September. The vote was affected by disputes over ethics provisions concerning President Donald Trump’s crypto interests.

Following that setback, the industry has shifted attention toward regulators including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission as potential rule-makers.

The DeFi Education Fund characterized the survey as evidence of bipartisan support for innovation in the United States. Its findings also suggest that voters may respond more readily to questions of security, technological competitiveness and personal control than to crypto-specific campaign messaging.
