Deutsche Bank plans Asia crypto custody expansion in 2027 as German launch approaches

Deutsche Bank is preparing to extend its digital-asset services into Asia next year, while its crypto custody offering is expected to launch in Germany within weeks, subject to regulatory approval. The plan would place the German banking group among established financial institutions seeking a larger role in the institutional cryptocurrency market.

Germany launch comes first

The bank’s initial custody service is designed for corporate and institutional customers. It will allow clients to hold and transfer selected digital assets while Deutsche Bank manages the wallets and private keys used to control them.

The first supported assets are expected to include bitcoin, ether and three stablecoins: USDC, EURC and EURAU. Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value against a reference currency or asset. In this case, the offering includes crypto assets as well as stablecoins linked to major currencies.

The German rollout remains dependent on regulatory approval. According to CoinDesk, Deutsche Bank received authorization from Germany’s financial regulator, BaFin, on October 12 under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets, or MiCA, framework. The authorization is listed in the interim register maintained by the European Securities and Markets Authority.

The service is expected to begin in Germany within weeks. A bank-managed custody model means clients would not need to operate their own wallets or safeguard their own private keys for the assets covered by the service. Private keys are the cryptographic credentials required to authorize transactions involving digital assets.

Asia expansion planned for 2027

Deutsche Bank plans to take the custody service into Asia in 2027, according to reporting cited by CoinDesk from Reuters. The bank has not specified which Asian markets or financial services it will target first.

The proposed expansion could give institutional customers in the region access to crypto custody through a global bank rather than relying solely on specialist digital-asset providers. The bank’s role would include the technology and operational processes needed to hold and transfer the supported assets on behalf of clients.

The Asia plan forms part of a broader set of digital-asset services under consideration. Deutsche Bank also intends to offer stablecoin conversion, tokenized deposits and services that help customers issue digital bonds and other blockchain-based securities. Tokenized deposits represent traditional bank deposits in a digital form using blockchain-related infrastructure, while digital bonds are debt securities issued or recorded using such technology.

The bank has worked with Bitpanda and Taurus on its custody plans. It is also entering a field that includes rivals such as Standard Chartered and BBVA, which are offering crypto custody services to institutional customers.

Digital assets tied to corporate-bank growth target

Deutsche Bank’s digital-asset strategy is linked to its corporate bank’s financial objectives. Podobnik said the plans are part of a target for roughly 8% compound annual revenue growth in the corporate bank between 2025 and 2028.

For institutional customers, custody can address one of the central operational issues involved in holding crypto assets: control and protection of private keys. A conventional custody provider assumes responsibility for safeguarding assets and processing authorized transfers, although the exact services and protections depend on the provider and applicable rules.

The planned product therefore extends beyond simply allowing customers to buy or sell cryptocurrencies. It combines asset safekeeping with possible services for converting stablecoins, representing deposits digitally and issuing blockchain-based securities. The initial rollout, however, is limited to the assets and services approved for the offering.
