Deutsche Bank is reportedly only weeks away from launching a cryptocurrency custody service, marking a significant step into digital-asset infrastructure by Germany’s largest bank. The service is expected to begin with bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies for European corporate and institutional clients, before expanding into Asia next year.
Deutsche Bank’s planned crypto platform
According to Reuters reporting cited by Bitcoin Magazine, Deutsche Bank’s corporate banking leadership said the lender was moving quickly on the custody service. The bank first formally disclosed its bitcoin custody plans in September, while noting that the launch depended on completing the applicable regulatory timeline.
Custody services are designed to hold and safeguard digital assets for clients. For institutional users, such services can provide an entry point into cryptocurrency markets without requiring them to manage the technical security arrangements associated with holding assets directly.
The initial offering is expected to support major cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin. The bank also plans to develop services that help clients move money into and out of stablecoins. Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a stable value, typically in relation to a traditional currency, and are increasingly being examined by financial institutions as part of payments and settlement infrastructure.
Expansion and wider banking shift
Deutsche Bank’s service is intended for corporate and institutional customers in Europe at launch, with an expansion into Asia planned for next year. Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the bank’s corporate banking division, told Reuters that the financial system will need to provide “tokenized or blockchain solutions.”
Blockchain is the underlying technology used by bitcoin to record transactions. Banks have increasingly explored blockchain-based products, while tokenization refers broadly to representing assets or financial instruments in digital form on such networks.
The move places Deutsche Bank among a growing group of major banks entering direct digital-asset custody. BNY Mellon, State Street, Standard Chartered, U.S. Bank and Citigroup have all committed to offering or developing direct cryptocurrency custody during the past 18 months, according to the source material. BNY Mellon became the first major U.S. bank to offer digital-asset custody in 2022.
Current market picture
Moneyiar market data at 22:04 on October 17, 2026, showed bitcoin at $81164.546646933, down 0.59% over 24 hours and 2.18% over seven days.
Other listed digital assets were also lower. Aethir was priced at $0.0054669645, down 4.41% in 24 hours and 17.57% over seven days. Comedian stood at $0.0540004596, down 2.68% and 11.42%, respectively, while RedStone was at $0.13748097, down 5.54% over 24 hours and 8.79% over seven days.
The custody launch would give Deutsche Bank a formal role in holding digital assets for professional clients, while its planned stablecoin-related services would broaden the bank’s involvement beyond storage into the movement of funds.
