DogeOS Opens Public Testnet to Bring Ethereum-Style Apps to Dogecoin

DogeOS has opened a public testnet for an EVM-compatible application layer built above Dogecoin. The network uses DOGE for fees and already lists lending, perpetual trading, stablecoin, prediction-market and gaming projects, but no mainnet date has been announced.

DogeOS Opens Public Testnet to Bring Ethereum-Style Apps to Dogecoin

DogeOS has opened the public testnet for an application layer designed to bring decentralized apps to the Dogecoin network, marking a new attempt to expand the cryptocurrency’s role beyond peer-to-peer payments.

The trial network became available on Sept. 30, according to Decrypt, and allows developers to test applications before the system is used with real money. DogeOS has not announced a date for launching its mainnet, the live version of the network.

What the DogeOS testnet does

Dogecoin was created by Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus in 2013 as a joke, but it has since developed into a multi-billion-dollar cryptocurrency and a widely recognized digital asset. Its core network functions primarily as a peer-to-peer ledger for transferring DOGE.

DogeOS is intended to add a separate software layer above that base network. The project’s goal is to support applications similar to those commonly associated with Ethereum, without changing Dogecoin’s underlying ledger. The project was founded by the team behind the MyDoge wallet.

In its documentation, DogeOS describes itself as an “Application Layer rollup network on Dogecoin” that runs on a zkVM. A zkVM is software that creates cryptographic proofs showing that transactions have been processed correctly. DogeOS is also EVM-compatible, meaning developers can use smart contracts, wallets and other tools designed for Ethereum-compatible environments.

The testnet uses DOGE to pay transaction fees. Users can obtain trial tokens through a faucet, which distributes 42.069 test DOGE per day on DogeOS. Because the network is still a test environment, these tokens are intended for experimentation rather than ordinary transactions involving real funds.

Projects preparing to build on DogeOS

The project’s launch materials identify several teams and applications that are preparing to use the new layer. Their planned products cover lending, trading, stablecoins, prediction markets and games:

  • Superposition Finance is a lending protocol that allows users to borrow against deposited crypto assets.
  • Derps is a perpetual exchange, a platform for contracts that track asset prices without a fixed expiry date.
  • USDoge is a collateralized-debt-position stablecoin, designed to maintain a stable value while being issued against locked collateral.
  • Snag is a prediction-market aggregator that brings together markets focused on real-world outcomes.
  • PlaysOut is a mini-game publisher that planned about 15 Doge-themed casual games by the end of 2025.

These examples show the intended scope of DogeOS. Rather than treating DOGE only as a transferable coin, the layer is designed to support financial applications, market-based products and entertainment built around the Dogecoin ecosystem.

DogeOS chief executive Jordan Jefferson described the launch as the start of Dogecoin’s transition “from asset to ecosystem.” Timothy Stebbing, a director of the Dogecoin Foundation, said the base layer’s “purity” should remain intact while additional functionality is introduced above it.

Why the separate layer matters

Adding functionality directly to Dogecoin’s base blockchain can be a slow and demanding process. The DogeOS team submitted a proposal in July 2025 to bring zero-knowledge proofs to the base layer, but Dogecoin does not have formal on-chain governance. Changes therefore require review by contributors, community discussion, security audits and support from miners.

A separate application layer offers a different approach: Dogecoin itself can remain largely unchanged while applications operate above it. The arrangement is intended to preserve the existing base network and give developers a broader environment for building products.

The launch also arrives while Dogecoin’s market performance remains weak compared with its record level. The source material says DOGE has fallen about 75% from its all-time high and remains one of the few major cryptocurrencies in a confirmed bearish trend, even after multiple Dogecoin exchange-traded funds launched. The testnet therefore represents a technology and ecosystem development, not an announced change in Dogecoin’s market outlook.

Current DOGE market picture

Moneyiar market data at 09:29 on Oct. 1, 2026, showed Dogecoin at $0.0945251641. DOGE was up 0.54% over the previous 24 hours and 2.26% over seven days.

The public testnet does not yet establish when DogeOS will become a live network. Until a mainnet launch is announced, developers and users are testing the system with test DOGE rather than using it for applications involving real funds.
