Ethereum and Major Altcoins Suffer Sharper Losses Than Bitcoin Amid Macro Pressure

Ethereum, XRP and Solana fell more sharply than Bitcoin as higher inflation, October rate-hike expectations and a stronger dollar pressured crypto markets. Analysts also linked the retreat to profit-taking after months of altcoin momentum and reduced futures positioning.

Ethereum and Major Altcoins Suffer Sharper Losses Than Bitcoin Amid Macro Pressure

Ethereum, XRP and Solana came under heavier selling pressure than Bitcoin over the 24 hours covered by Decrypt, as investors responded to hotter inflation data, renewed expectations of an October interest-rate increase and a stronger U.S. dollar. The move followed a period of strong performance for several altcoins, leaving traders to reassess both macroeconomic risks and crowded positions.

Altcoins Fall More Than Bitcoin

The total cryptocurrency market capitalization fell 2.5% to $2.8 trillion over the period described in the report. Ethereum declined 5.5%, bringing its market capitalization to $289 billion, while XRP dropped 5.1% to $82.4 billion. Solana fell 3.8% to a $60.6 billion market capitalization.

Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency, also weakened, but its 3.1% daily decline was smaller than the losses recorded by those major altcoins. Bitcoin was reported at a market capitalization of $1.6 trillion and was down 2.6% over the week.

The contrasting performance reflects a familiar pattern in risk-sensitive markets: assets that have recently attracted stronger momentum can experience larger declines when traders reduce exposure. Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares, told Decrypt that altcoins are generally more sensitive to financial conditions because their performance depends more heavily on expectations of expanding liquidity.

Inflation and Rate Expectations Change Trading Behavior

The immediate backdrop was a U.S. consumer price index increase of 3.7% for the year to September. The report also cited Myriad prediction-market data showing a 28% probability of an interest-rate increase in October. Myriad is operated by Dastan, the parent company of Decrypt.

Nick Forster, founder of options exchange Derive.xyz, said in a note shared with Decrypt that the inflation reading pushed traders into what he called “protection mode.” Hedging activity on the platform doubled, while larger investors reduced optimistic positions established in the spring.

Forster described the change as a shift away from longer-term upside bets and toward short-term protection. In his view, that indicated that institutional market participants were reassessing their exposure to an uncertain interest-rate path.

Nolan also pointed to the U.S. dollar reaching a near 18-month high. He said crypto has tended to show an inverse relationship with the U.S. Dollar Index over the medium term. Cryptocurrencies are priced in dollars, while a stronger dollar can also coincide with tighter liquidity and weaker appetite for risk.

Strong Previous Performance Adds to the Pullback

The retreat was not attributed solely to the latest macroeconomic data. Max Shannon, senior associate at Bitwise Europe, said the move also represented a reversal after the “strength and momentum” altcoins had displayed in recent months.

Shannon said open interest in altcoin futures, excluding Ethereum, had fallen by $8 billion since the beginning of October. That decline suggests traders had reduced positions after a strong run, a process he characterized as taking some gains off the table.

Ethereum had been a notable recent outperformer. According to Shannon, ETH beat Bitcoin for three consecutive months, marking its first such streak since March 2021. Investors subsequently withdrew money from Ethereum exchange-traded funds. Those products recorded 11 consecutive trading days of net outflows totaling $782.8 million, followed by a brief inflow on Tuesday. Net outflows then resumed, reaching $129.5 million according to CoinGlass data cited in the report.

Shannon described the price action as a consolidation phase for altcoins that had already performed well. He said these tokens often move more closely with Bitcoin during difficult market conditions, although their moves can be more pronounced.

Moneyiar Market Picture

Moneyiar data at 9:24 p.m. on October 15, 2026, showed a different 24-hour snapshot from the losses reported earlier by Decrypt. Ethereum was trading at $2,454.76, up 1.51% over 24 hours but down 0.76% over seven days. XRP stood at $1.3385, up 0.93% on the day and down 3.06% for the week.

Solana was priced at $105.83, with a 1.79% 24-hour gain and a 3.85% seven-day decline. Shiba Inu was at $0.0000051233, up 1.58% over 24 hours and down 3.45% over seven days. The difference between the daily gains in the Moneyiar snapshot and the earlier losses in the report underscores that cryptocurrency prices can change quickly during a volatile session.

The outlook remained uncertain in the comments cited by Decrypt. Nolan said a decline in expectations for an October rate increase would be needed to improve the backdrop for altcoins, but he did not identify a clear market bottom. He noted that further losses could follow if Bitcoin lost support, while a renewed Bitcoin move above $80,000 could instead be followed by a disproportionately strong rebound in altcoins. Those were scenarios presented by Nolan, not forecasts or investment advice.
