The FBI and US Secret Service have joined efforts to investigate and recover cryptocurrency stolen in the $6.3 billion hack affecting Binance, according to Cointelegraph. The agencies are working with government and private-sector partners as the exchange seeks to trace the assets and restore normal operations.
US agencies assist recovery effort
The FBI told Reuters it was assessing the incident’s scope and possible effects with government and industry partners, while coordinating investigative steps. A Secret Service spokesperson separately told Bloomberg that investigators were working continuously with private-sector partners to recover the stolen funds.
Binance confirmed on Friday that it was cooperating with law enforcement, although it did not identify the agencies involved in its public statement on X. The involvement of the FBI and Secret Service adds a formal US law-enforcement dimension to the response, alongside the exchange’s own recovery work.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributed the attack to North Korea’s TraderTraitor group. The source material did not provide further details about how the group allegedly carried out the theft.
Binance sets aside billions as withdrawals remain paused
Binance said it had reserved more than $6.34 billion in company funds to cover losses. That amount includes $5 billion already held in the affected cryptocurrencies. A company spokesperson said those tokens were in Binance’s custody but declined to provide wallet addresses, citing security concerns.
Withdrawals were still suspended on Friday. Binance said it planned to restart them in stages from Sunday, subject to security checks. The exchange also expected to publish proof-of-reserves results on Monday. Proof of reserves is a disclosure intended to show the assets held by a crypto platform, although the source did not provide details of the planned report.
The scale of the incident has been accompanied by substantial customer activity. Binance, described in the source as the largest cryptocurrency exchange by reserves, held $134 billion in total assets. DefiLlama data cited in the report showed approximately $6 billion in outflows over the previous 24 hours.
Why the investigation matters
Recovering crypto assets can involve tracking transactions across public blockchains and working with exchanges and other private-sector firms that may be able to identify or freeze funds. The FBI and Secret Service involvement signals that the response is being handled as a major cybercrime investigation, while Binance’s planned withdrawal process is tied to additional security checks.
There is a precedent for US agencies helping recover cryptocurrency linked to an exchange breach. In February 2022, the US Department of Justice said law-enforcement agencies, including the FBI, had helped seize 94,000 Bitcoin connected to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Those coins were valued at $3.6 billion at the time.
