FINMA Approves Switzerland’s First Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors

FINMA Approves Switzerland’s First Bitcoin ETF for Retail Investors

Switzerland’s financial regulator has approved the country’s first Bitcoin exchange-traded fund designed for retail investors, clearing a major regulatory step for a product that will invest directly in BTC.

The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, known as FINMA, said the approval reflected growing interest in cryptocurrency investments, with Bitcoin attracting particular attention. The regulator did not identify the fund provider and did not give a date for when the ETF will begin trading.

According to Cointelegraph, several fund providers have either submitted or announced applications for Bitcoin ETFs in Switzerland. The approval therefore comes as interest in regulated cryptocurrency investment products expands, although the specific fund authorized by FINMA has not yet been publicly named in the announcement.

What FINMA’s approval means

An exchange-traded fund is an investment vehicle whose shares can be traded on an exchange. In this case, the approved product will invest directly in Bitcoin, rather than gaining exposure through shares of cryptocurrency-related companies or other assets. Its availability to retail investors means it is intended to be accessible beyond professional or otherwise qualified investors.

The decision removes a significant regulatory barrier to launching Switzerland’s first retail-accessible ETF with direct Bitcoin investment. However, approval is not the same as a confirmed trading launch: FINMA did not specify when the fund would become available or identify its issuer.

Switzerland already has other exchange-traded products linked to Bitcoin. SIX Swiss Exchange said in August 2025 that iShares would start trading a Bitcoin exchange-traded product fully backed by BTC held in cold storage by Coinbase Custody International Limited. Those products do not require FINMA approval, a FINMA spokesperson told Cointelegraph, because they are governed exclusively by SIX Exchange Regulation.

Earlier cryptocurrency fund approval

FINMA authorized a fund for qualified investors in 2021 that invested primarily in a basket of cryptocurrencies. At the time, the regulator granted an exemption from standard risk-diversification requirements. It pointed to Bitcoin’s long trading history and particularly high trading volume compared with other digital assets.

The latest approval does not remove the risks associated with Bitcoin. FINMA specifically warned that cryptocurrency investments are highly volatile and that investors could lose a significant portion of their invested capital. That warning is especially relevant for a retail product, whose potential audience is broader than the qualified-investor fund approved in 2021.

Switzerland’s crypto market picture

Moneyiar data at 2026-10-21 11:04:00+03:30 showed Bitcoin trading at 83364.316552182 USD. BTC was up 2.29% over 24 hours and up 0.08% over seven days.

Switzerland is widely viewed as one of Europe’s more crypto-friendly jurisdictions. In 2023, the city of Lugano adopted Bitcoin and Tether USDt payments for municipal fees, making it one of the first city administrations globally to take that step. FINMA’s approval adds a regulated retail investment product to that broader cryptocurrency landscape, while leaving the fund’s launch timing and issuer still undisclosed.
