Crypto custody company Fireblocks has rejected a report that it is in late-stage discussions to be acquired by Visa for $2.5 billion, saying the alleged transaction is “news to us, and not true at present time.”
The denial followed reporting by Axios, which cited multiple unidentified sources and said Visa was negotiating to buy the company. Fireblocks issued its response soon after the report appeared. Visa did not respond to requests for comment.
Fireblocks rejects acquisition report
Fireblocks provides custody infrastructure for digital assets. Its technology is designed to help clients hold and manage cryptocurrencies, using security methods that include multi-party computation, or MPC, and advanced pre-key sharding technologies.
Custody is a central service in the crypto industry because institutions and other large users need systems to safeguard private keys and authorize transactions. MPC divides control across multiple parties or components, rather than relying on a single complete key in one location.
A proposed $2.5 billion purchase would represent a substantial reduction from Fireblocks’ most recently reported private-market valuation. In 2022, the company raised $550 million in funding at an $8 billion valuation.
Other potential buyers mentioned
Speculation about a possible sale had circulated for roughly three or four weeks, according to the report. CoinDesk also reported that unidentified sources had previously placed Coinbase among the companies potentially interested in buying Fireblocks.
Coinbase later denied involvement in a possible transaction after the report was published. The denial adds another layer of uncertainty around the acquisition rumors, while Visa has not publicly commented on the reported discussions.
The reported figures are valuations associated with different points in time and transaction contexts. A private funding valuation is not necessarily the same as a price a buyer would ultimately pay in an acquisition, but the comparison highlights the scale of the difference between Fireblocks’ 2022 valuation and the reported $2.5 billion offer.
