Founders Fund has led a $5 million purchase of governance tokens in Anvil, an Ethereum-based decentralized finance protocol designed to use digital assets as collateral for financial commitments. Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish and Protoscale Capital also took part in the transaction, according to CoinDesk.
The deal comes as Anvil introduces software intended to make its collateral infrastructure easier for businesses and financial institutions to use. The project’s new software development kit, or SDK, is designed to let companies connect to Anvil’s technology without having to write blockchain code themselves.
The transaction’s valuation and other terms were not disclosed. Anvil said the tokens sold to the investors came from its existing treasury, meaning the purchase did not involve the creation of newly issued tokens.
Investors buy governance rights
The purchased asset, ANVL, is Anvil’s governance token. Holders can participate in decisions concerning the protocol’s development and future direction. Anvil has a total supply of 100 billion ANVL tokens, of which 80 billion are currently in circulation.
Founders Fund, the venture capital firm backed by billionaire Peter Thiel, led the purchase. Pantera Capital, Theta Blockchain Ventures, Bullish and Protoscale Capital were also involved. Bullish, the parent company of CoinDesk, is separately working with Anvil to examine possible uses of the protocol in its operations.
Joey Krug, a partner at Founders Fund, said in the announcement that companies need confidence that payment and credit obligations will be honored. He said Anvil is intended to support those obligations with verifiable digital-asset collateral, while the SDK is meant to simplify integration into business products.
Anvil Research Labs, the research and development company building enterprise tools for the protocol, identified Consensus, Bitcoin.com, payments company Flexa and other companies as users or integration partners for its tooling. The announcement did not provide financial details about those relationships.
Anvil’s alternative to crypto-backed borrowing
Crypto collateral is already widely used in decentralized finance, where users commonly deposit digital assets and borrow against them. In a conventional DeFi lending arrangement, the borrower generally pays interest and risks liquidation if the value of the pledged collateral drops too far.
Anvil is targeting a different application. Rather than requiring a collateral provider to take out a loan, its system is designed to reserve digital assets as a guarantee for a financial commitment, such as a payment or a credit obligation. The provider does not necessarily borrow money or pay interest simply to establish the guarantee.
The protocol’s core product has been described as an on-chain version of a letter of credit. Under that type of arrangement, assets are set aside to support a promise of payment and may be claimed by the other party if the commitment is not fulfilled. Moving the arrangement onto a blockchain is intended to make the collateral and the conditions attached to it verifiable through the protocol.
Anvil was developed by the Acronym Foundation, bootstrapped and released as fully open-source software. Its network currently has approximately $14 million in total value locked, a measure of assets deposited in a decentralized finance protocol. That makes it considerably smaller than established DeFi lending platforms.
For comparison, DeFi lending protocols collectively held about $56 billion in assets, according to DefiLlama, with Aave and Morpho among the largest platforms. Anvil’s approach therefore places it in the wider collateral and lending market while seeking to use crypto assets for guarantees beyond standard borrowing.

The new SDK is central to Anvil’s attempt to move beyond crypto-native users. By reducing the need for specialized blockchain development, the project is presenting its collateral mechanism as infrastructure that companies and financial institutions could incorporate into existing products. The $5 million token purchase gives the participating investors governance exposure as Anvil develops that enterprise-focused strategy.
