Goldman Sachs is making its roughly $100 billion Treasury fund available to institutional digital-asset firms through Lynq, a settlement network for crypto companies, without issuing a blockchain-based version of the fund.
The arrangement gives firms using Lynq a way to place cash into Goldman’s FTIXX between trades and earn a return until the funds are needed elsewhere. Transactions will be handled by tZERO Securities, an SEC-registered broker-dealer.
According to CoinDesk, FTIXX is the first external fund offered through Lynq. The network previously had only one investment product available to its users. The addition expands the range of assets institutional crypto firms can access through infrastructure designed for digital-asset markets.
A traditional fund, not a tokenized product
The offering differs from several other major financial institutions’ blockchain initiatives. BlackRock’s BUIDL was created as a tokenized fund, while Franklin Templeton provides tokenized shares of its money market fund through BENJI.
FTIXX remains a conventional Goldman Sachs fund. Lynq is acting as an additional distribution channel rather than converting the fund into digital tokens or creating a new blockchain-based investment vehicle.
That distinction allows Goldman Sachs to reach crypto-market participants without building a separate tokenized product for the purpose. Instead, Lynq is incorporating access to an established Treasury fund into the systems that institutional digital-asset companies already use to move and settle money.
Jerald David, Lynq’s chief executive, described the arrangement as part of a broader convergence between traditional financial-market participants and digital-asset firms in an interview with CoinDesk TV.
Cash management between crypto trades
For institutional firms, large cash balances may sit unused while they wait for the next trade or settlement. Through the Lynq arrangement, eligible clients can place that money into FTIXX and withdraw it when they need to deploy the funds elsewhere.
David said Lynq clients had requested another treasury asset on the network, including one with a different yield profile from the platform’s existing instrument. The participating firms include B2C2, Wintermute, Galaxy, FalconX, Crypto.com and Fireblocks.
Access is subject to several conditions. Lynq had to modify its technology, limit the offering to U.S. clients and integrate with Mosaic. Customers must also have a relationship with tZERO Securities and pass the relevant onboarding and eligibility checks.
The arrangement therefore does not make FTIXX universally available to all crypto users. It is aimed at institutional digital-asset firms that meet the platform’s requirements and already operate within the relevant settlement infrastructure.
Lynq’s institutional network
Lynq operates on a private, permissioned Avalanche Layer 1 blockchain. The company says that more than 30 institutional digital-asset firms are onboarded to its network, which holds more than $89 million in assets.
The inclusion of FTIXX makes Lynq’s platform multi-asset capable, according to David. He called Goldman Sachs’ Treasury fund the second asset available to institutional clients on the network.
The move illustrates one route through which traditional finance and crypto markets can become more closely connected: existing financial products can be distributed through digital-asset infrastructure without necessarily being tokenized. In this case, the key change is where eligible firms can access the fund and how it fits into their cash-management workflow, rather than the creation of a new digital representation of FTIXX.
