Google Launches Playground, a Prompt-Based Tool for Building Playable Games

Google has launched Playground, a browser-based platform that turns plain-language descriptions into playable games. Available initially to U.S. adults, the experimental tool supports conversational editing, sharing and selected multiplayer features, with Unity Spark integration planned later this year.

Google Launches Playground, a Prompt-Based Tool for Building Playable Games

Google has introduced a browser-based gaming platform that lets users create playable games by describing their ideas in ordinary language, opening a new front in the race to apply generative artificial intelligence to game development.

A game made through conversation

Playground launched on Oct. 7 for adults aged 18 and over in the United States. Instead of writing code, users describe the game they want, then receive a playable version that runs in a web browser on a phone or laptop.

Creators can continue developing the result through a chat-based process. They can request changes to elements such as physics, rules, characters and settings, according to Google. Finished games may be kept private or shared through a link.

Google describes Playground as an “early experiment” intended to make game creation more accessible. Its announcement presents the product as a way to turn an idea into something playable through prompts, rather than requiring users to learn programming first.

Access to creation features is being introduced in tiers linked to a user’s Google AI subscription. Google did not disclose subscription prices in the announcement and did not identify the artificial-intelligence models powering Playground.

Sharing, multiplayer and the Unity connection

Playground includes a community gallery where users can publish games. Google says each game submitted to the gallery goes through a safety screening. Some types of games will also support leaderboards and multiplayer features.

The platform is not positioned as the final destination for every kind of game development. Google and Unity said Unity Spark will connect to Playground later this year. Spark is intended for users seeking more advanced capabilities, including professional-level mechanics and higher-fidelity 3D graphics.

Unity develops the game engine software used by studios to build games. Google and Unity also said a closed beta for the integration is coming soon. The companies did not provide a more specific launch date in the material accompanying the announcement.

The planned connection matters because Playground currently focuses on lowering the barrier to creating playable concepts through natural-language instructions, while Unity Spark is described as the path toward more sophisticated production. Google’s own characterization of Playground as experimental indicates that the service is at an early stage rather than being presented as a replacement for established development workflows.

Google’s broader AI gaming push

Playground follows earlier work by Google’s DeepMind research division on AI systems designed to generate interactive game environments. In 2024, DeepMind unveiled Genie, a model trained on more than 200,000 hours of gameplay video that could create a simple 2D platform game from an image or text prompt. Genie had 11 billion parameters, the adjustable values through which an AI stores learned information.

In January, Google opened Project Genie to AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. Project Genie is built on Genie 3, described as a “world model” that generates an interactive environment in real time as a user moves through it. Sessions were limited to 60 seconds, and Google warned that generated worlds might not consistently follow prompts or real-world physics.

The technology has already affected sentiment toward companies involved in game creation and user-generated content. After the Project Genie release, Unity shares closed down about 24% the following day, while Roblox and other game-related stocks also fell. Investors were concerned that AI could displace traditional game-development tools. Roblox had said in 2023 that it was moving toward allowing users to create avatars and clothing through text prompts.

According to Decrypt, Playground goes further than basic game-related experiments available through a standard Google Gemini session by drawing on tools and resources associated with more experienced game makers. However, the source material does not establish how the new platform’s underlying systems compare with commercial game engines or professional production pipelines.

Playground is initially limited by geography and age, and its creation access depends on Google AI subscription tiers. For now, its significance lies in making a game prototype available through a description and an iterative conversation, while Google and Unity prepare the more advanced Spark integration.
