Bitcoin fell sharply after U.S. inflation accelerated in September, while Treasury yields rose and equity futures weakened as traders reconsidered the outlook for Federal Reserve interest-rate policy.
September inflation exceeds expectations
The U.S. Consumer Price Index increased 0.6% in September, accelerating from a 0.4% rise in August. The monthly result matched economists’ expectations, but the annual figures were stronger than forecast.
CPI was up 3.7% from a year earlier, compared with 3.4% in August and the 3.6% estimate. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose 0.3% during the month. That was unchanged from August but above the 0.2% consensus forecast.
On an annual basis, core CPI increased 2.6%, up from 2.4% in August and above the 2.5% estimate. The figures came from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in a report released Wednesday morning, according to CoinDesk.
Markets reassess the Federal Reserve outlook
The data arrived after several Federal Reserve officials had indicated that another 25-basis-point interest-rate increase could be appropriate before the end of the year. Before the inflation report, market pricing generally pointed to the central bank holding rates steady at its meeting later in October and raising them at its final meeting of the year in early December.
The hotter annual inflation readings have raised the possibility that an October increase could come back into consideration. Higher interest rates can weigh on assets that do not generate traditional income, while changes in expected policy can quickly affect financial-market prices. The September report therefore mattered beyond the inflation figures themselves, because it challenged the expectation of a near-term pause.
Bitcoin and traditional markets react
Bitcoin dropped by about $1,000 following the release, trading at $82,800 in the immediate reaction described in the report. The move came alongside a sharp rise in government bond yields.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed 9.3 basis points to 5.308%, while the two-year yield rose 13.1 basis points to 4.924%. Bond yields often respond to expectations for interest rates, making the move a direct indication of the market’s reassessment after the inflation data.
U.S. equity futures also moved lower. Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.65%, and S&P 500 futures fell 0.3%. Gold declined 1.5% to $4,116 per ounce.
