JPMorgan projects 10% annual bitcoin returns over the next decade

JPMorgan Asset Management expects bitcoin to deliver annualized returns of 10% over the next decade in its base-case outlook, putting the cryptocurrency ahead of the bank’s forecasts for U.S. equities, bonds and gold. The projection is the first time JPMorgan’s research has assigned bitcoin a range of long-term return scenarios, although the bank continues to describe the asset as speculative and difficult to incorporate into conventional portfolios.

JPMorgan’s bitcoin scenarios

The forecast appears in JPMorgan Asset Management’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report, published Tuesday, according to CoinDesk. The report gives bitcoin three possible annualized outcomes over a 10-year period:

  • Bear case: a 9.7% annual loss
  • Base case: a 10% annual gain
  • Bull case: a 17% annual gain

Annualized returns show the average yearly rate over the period, rather than suggesting that bitcoin would rise by the same percentage every year. The wide gap between JPMorgan’s negative and positive scenarios reflects the uncertainty surrounding an asset known for substantial price swings.

The base-case bitcoin forecast is higher than the asset manager’s expectations for several traditional assets. JPMorgan projects annual growth of 7.5% for U.S. large-cap equities, 7.7% for U.S. small-cap equities, 5.6% to 6.6% for U.S. bonds and 5.5% for gold.

Those comparisons do not mean JPMorgan expects bitcoin to outperform in every year. They represent long-term assumptions used in the bank’s capital-market analysis, with the bitcoin estimate presented alongside forecasts for established asset classes.

A cautious assessment of bitcoin’s role

Despite the higher return estimate, JPMorgan Asset Management does not present bitcoin as a standard portfolio diversifier. Portfolio manager Dr. Sheena Shah and Dennis Cristallo, the firm’s head of digital asset strategy, said bitcoin’s volatility and changing relationship with other asset classes remain barriers to broader portfolio use.

The analysts characterize bitcoin as a speculative asset and as a potential hedge against monetary easing. In their assessment, it has no strategic portfolio role beyond a view that fiat currencies may expand or that assets could increasingly be traded on blockchains.

A portfolio diversifier is generally expected to behave differently from other holdings at important moments, potentially helping reduce overall portfolio risk. JPMorgan’s comments indicate that bitcoin’s relationship with stocks, bonds and other assets has not been stable enough for the bank to rely on it for that purpose.

The report also says bitcoin often trades like a high-beta risk asset linked to global money-supply growth, while at other times it is treated as “digital gold.” That shifting behavior makes it harder to model alongside conventional investments. The analysts further noted that bitcoin does not have fundamentals based on cash flows, leaving adoption, regulation, liquidity and technology as important factors in assessing its economics.

JPMorgan’s changing crypto stance

The forecast comes against a complicated background for JPMorgan and cryptocurrency. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon famously called bitcoin a “fraud” in 2017, a skeptical view he has repeated in softer language in subsequent years. The new research does not remove that caution: the bank’s asset-management arm has put a numerical range on bitcoin’s potential returns while emphasizing the risks and uncertainty attached to the asset.

That combination is significant because it separates a return assumption from an endorsement of bitcoin as a core holding. JPMorgan’s base case is the most optimistic of the bank’s central forecasts listed in the report, but its bear case also implies a substantial annual decline. The range therefore highlights both the potential reward and the possibility of severe underperformance.
